Job summary

The Phoenix Barrel Company Limited invites applications for an engineering apprentice to learn a full CNC manufacturing process. You will work with experienced machinists and progress through setting up machines, measuring parts, reading drawings, and maintaining equipment.

Training is to Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Level 3, with course through Solihull College & University Centre. Duration is 3 years 6 months, with progression into CNC programming and quality roles as you gain

Qualifications

  • GCSE English and Maths at level 4 or above are essential.
  • Willingness to learn and hands-on approach are required.
  • Practical mindset and good communication are important for teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Operate CNC lathes as part of training.
  • Assist with machine set-up and production tasks.
  • Read engineering drawings and measure components with precision instruments.
  • Perform deburring and finishing of parts to quality standards.
  • Record inspection data accurately and maintain equipment.
  • Follow health and safety procedures and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Support experienced machinists and learn production planning.

Job description

Introduction

Join one of the UK's leading manufacturers of precision rifle barrels and learn a highly specialised engineering trade. Working alongside experienced CNC machinists, you'll develop skills in advanced manufacturing, precision measurement, quality control and CNC machining while earning a nationally recognised qualification.

About the Employer

This role involves standing for long periods, lifting engineering materials within safe limits, operating machinery and maintaining high standards of safety and precision. Applicants should enjoy practical, hands-on work and be committed to learning.

What You'll Do

The apprentice will learn every stage of the manufacturing process, including:

  • Operating CNC lathes
  • Machine set-up
  • Measuring components using precision equipment
  • Reading engineering drawings
  • Deburring and finishing parts
  • Recording inspection data
  • Maintaining machinery
  • Health & Safety procedures
  • Lean manufacturing
  • Supporting experienced machinists
  • Learning production planning and workflow

The successful apprentice will gradually take responsibility for producing high-quality precision engineered components.

Training Outcome

Successful completion could lead to a permanent position as a CNC Machinist with opportunities to progress into CNC programming, process improvement, quality inspection, production planning or supervisory roles.
