AMA Admin is seeking a Machine Shop Operative in Chester to support daily CNC and machining activities. You will assist with pipe bending, valve tapping, material prep and basic component modifications, working closely with skilled machinists.

Full training is provided, with clear paths toward CNC operating and advanced machining. Ideal candidates have completed an apprenticeship or college course and have roughly 1 year in a shop environment.

Qualifications

  • Engineering apprenticeship or NVQ Level 2 is desirable.
  • Some prior machine shop or manufacturing experience.
  • Basic machining or machine operating experience.
  • Ability to read basic engineering drawings.
  • Pipe bending experience is desirable.
  • Willingness to learn CNC machining.

Responsibilities

  • Support CNC machinists and lathe operators with daily production activities.
  • Assist basic CNC machine operation under supervision of experienced machinists.
  • Bend and prepare pipes and tubing for production.
  • Tap valves and carry out basic component modifications.
  • Measure, mark out, cut and prepare materials for machining.
  • Load and unload materials safely.
  • Read and work from basic engineering drawings and production instructions.
  • Complete basic dimensional checks using measuring equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe working environment.
  • Meet manufacturing schedules with the wider production team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Machine Shop Operative to join a successful, family run design and manufacturing business operating within a rapidly expanding technical sector.

The Role of the Machine Shop Operative

The Machine Shop Operative will support the day to day running of the machine shop, working closely with CNC machinists and other experienced members of the production team.

This position is ideal for someone at the beginning of their engineering career who has completed an apprenticeship or college course and gained around 1 year of experience within a machine shop, manufacturing or hands on assembly environment.

The Machine Shop Operative will assist with CNC machining activities, pipe bending, tapping valves, preparing materials and completing basic component modifications.

Full training and development will be provided, with the opportunity to progress into CNC operating and skilled machining.

Responsibilities of the Machine Shop Operative
  • Support CNC machinists and lathe operators with daily production activities
  • Assist with basic CNC machine operation under the guidance of experienced machinists
  • Bend and prepare pipes and tubing for production
  • Tap valves and carry out basic modifications to components
  • Measure, mark out, cut and prepare materials for machining
  • Load and unload materials and components safely
  • Deburr, clean and finish machined components
  • Read and work from basic engineering drawings and production instructions
  • Complete basic dimensional checks using measuring equipment
  • Prepare tooling, materials and consumables for production
  • Support routine machine cleaning and basic maintenance activities
  • Report defects, quality concerns and unsafe working conditions
  • Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment
  • Work closely with the wider production team to meet manufacturing schedules
Requirements of the Machine Shop Operative
  • An Engineering Apprenticeship, college qualification or NVQ Level 2 (desired)
  • Some previous experience within a machine shop, manufacturing, engineering or hands on assembly environment
  • Basic machining or machine operating experience
  • A good practical and mechanical aptitude
  • Experience using hand tools safely and effectively
  • The ability to read basic engineering drawings
  • Pipe bending experience (desired)
  • Forklift or overhead crane experience (desired)
  • A willingness to learn CNC machining and develop new engineering skills
  • A reliable, proactive and safety conscious approach
  • Good attention to detail and the ability to work effectively within a team
Salary and Benefits of the Machine Shop Operative
  • £28,000 - £30,000 (dependent on experience)
  • Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
  • 26 day's annual leave plus bank holidays
