Our client is a main contractor who specialize in retail and commercial projects across the UK. From their head office near Wakefield they deliver fast-track fit-outs, refurbishments, and new build projects for major retail brands across the country.

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical & Mechanical Designer to join our dynamic shopfitting and construction team. The ideal candidate will design, coordinate, and deliver E&M solutions for retail and commercial fit-out projects across the UK. This role involves close collaboration with project managers, architects, contractors, and clients to ensure systems are safe, compliant, efficient, and integrated seamlessly into high-quality interior environments.

Key Responsibilities
Design & Documentation
  • Produce detailed electrical and mechanical design drawings, schematics, and layouts for retail and commercial fit-out projects.
  • Create and develop technical documents, including specification sheets, load calculations, schedules, and equipment lists.
  • Design power distribution, lighting schemes, emergency lighting, small power, data, CCTV, and fire alarm layouts.
  • Design mechanical systems including HVAC layouts, ventilation, plumbing, and drainage systems.
  • Ensure all designs meet project requirements, client standards, and brand guidelines.
Project Coordination
  • Work closely with project managers, site teams, architects, and subcontractors to ensure accurate design integration.
  • Attend design meetings, site surveys, and client briefings as required.
  • Review and approve subcontractor design submissions, ensuring alignment with project objectives.
  • Provide technical support during installation and commissioning stages.
Compliance & Standards
  • Ensure all electrical and mechanical designs comply with UK regulations, including:
    • BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations)
    • BS/EN lighting standards
    • Building Regulations (Parts B, F, L, M, etc.)
    • CIBSE guidelines
    • Health and Safety requirements
  • Conduct risk assessments and apply safe design principles.
  • Stay up to date with regulatory changes and industry best practices.
Quality & Efficiency
  • Design solutions that optimise energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and ease of installation.
  • Identify value-engineering opportunities without compromising quality or compliance.
  • Support project handover with accurate testing and O&M documentation.
Skills & Experience Required
  • Proven experience as an E&M Designer, Electrical Designer, Mechanical Designer, or Building Services Designer—ideally within shopfitting, retail, or commercial construction.
  • Strong knowledge of UK building services regulations and industry standards.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD essential; Revit/MagiCAD advantageous).
  • Strong understanding of electrical distribution, HVAC principles, and building services integration.
  • Ability to work from briefs, surveys, and architectural drawings to produce accurate E&M design packages.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and coordination abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
Qualifications
  • HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or similar.
  • Membership or working toward membership with IET, CIBSE, or equivalent (desirable).
  • CSCS card (advantageous)
