Job summary

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Gloucester is seeking a Lung Cancer Specialist Nurse at Band 6 for 30 hours a week to develop clinical practice within the lung cancer team and deliver high-quality specialist supportive care across the patient pathway.

You will lead nurse-led clinics, participate in MDT meetings, support risk-stratified pathways, and contribute to education, governance and research initiatives within a dynamic NHS trust.

Qualifications

• Current NMC registration
• Evidence of CPD in palliative and/or cancer care
• Advanced communication skills
• Significant experience at Band 5 or Band 6, Non medical prescribing
• IR(ME)R training
• Physical assessment and clinical reasoning course

Responsibilities

Job description

Lung Cancer Specialist Nurse, Band 6 (30 hours a week)

This is an opportunity to develop your clinical & professional practice as a senior nurse within the lung cancer team across Gloucester Hospitals. You will work as a core member of the multidisciplinary team to the highest standard of specialist supportive care managing patients throughout their lung cancer pathway. The post holder will also support the personalised cancer care agenda and develop risk stratified pathways in order to continue the development and improvement of cancer care provision that is received by our patients, their families and carers.

Main duties of the job

The post holder should demonstrate well-developed interpersonal, communication, negotiating and influencing skills demonstrated through experience of working in complex and demanding environments. Providing advice, support and leadership within clinical teams. Deliver against departmental and service objectives, achieving quality outcomes and prioritising own workload. Collect and analyse data from various sources to assess impact of service to look for innovative ways of developing and managing the service more effectively such as digital triage and patient communication. To attend, in departmental service meetings to ensure involvement in decision making processes. Attending and participating in the lung MDT meetings ensuring the outcomes are communicated with patients/clinicians in a timely manner. To use excellent prioritising and time management skills to meet the unpredictable and conflicting needs of the role. Contribute to the development of speciality protocols and guidelines for a nurse-led service. Autonomously run nurse-led clinics ensuring patients have appropriate, timely clinical and practical information and support. Ensuring patient physical symptoms and concerns are actioned, liaising with the MDT as appropriate. Evaluate and analyse clinical problems using their clinical knowledge, seeking out and applying relevant evidence, enhanced interpretation of clinical investigations, interventions and skills to make clinical decisions., Demonstrate and promote a holistic, patient centred style of clinical practice. The post holder will have a critical detailed understanding of theory and practical knowledge of Lung cancer treatment and management. Evaluate and analyse clinical problems using their clinical knowledge, seeking out and applying relevant evidence, enhanced interpretation of clinical investigations, interventions and skills to make clinical decisions. These will include ordering and interpretation of radiological investigations, pathology and haematology and biochemistry. All used to support the patient treatment care and support. To use clinical reasoning skills and techniques to assess, diagnose, plan and offer a range of enhanced supportive care options; deliver, evaluate by providing timely information to enable the patient to make informed choices about their treatment. Supervise and support the Cancer Support Workers to ensure completion of holistic needs assessments and care plans as appropriate Act as patient advocate for those who have doubts over proposed treatment and those individuals without capacity to consent to treatment. Within scope of specialty and personal competence, to prescribe medications as an independent nurse prescriber, within the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Using reasonable adjustments for patients who may have communication, perceptual or cognitive/understanding difficulties. Respond to distressing situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and taking appropriate actions. To use excellent prioritising and time management skills to meet the unpredictable and conflicting needs of the service. Organise and plan own caseload activity to meet the fluctuating needs of the patients and the demands of the service. Co-ordinating patient care throughout the patient pathway from diagnosis to end of life care, ensuring continuity of care, liaising with and engaging primary, secondary and tertiary services. To deliver safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using equipment and resources safely and appropriately. To maintain clear, accurate and concise patient records in line with our Trust policy and professional standards. Maintain patient dignity and confidentiality at all times. Participate in and undertake national and local research and audit and implement change as appropriate. Be actively involved in and support departmental education programmes for patient group, clinical staff and LWBC teams. Develop and implement specialist teaching sessions to support the wider MDT Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures Participate in clinical audits and research projects and implement changes as required, including the development, and updating of practice protocols/ guidelines and procedures locally Contribute to the Clinical Governance and Quality agenda Develop and share own clinical knowledge with other members of the local and wider clinical team. Consider own practice and that of others to ensure standards of patient care and experience are continually evaluated and improved. The post-holder is expected to take responsibility for self development on a continuous basis, undertaking on-the-job and other training and contributing to own personal development plan.
