Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is offering a 12-month development secondment for an experienced Registered Nurse aiming to progress toward a Clinical Nurse Specialist role in lung cancer care.
You will work with a multidisciplinary team across the lung cancer pathway, undertaking a structured development programme with mentorship and supervision to build advanced clinical skills.
Are you a motivated and compassionate Registered Nurse with an interest in cancer care and aspirations to develop towards a future Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role?
We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Band 5 nurse to join our Lung Clinical Nurse Specialist Team on a 12-month developmental secondment. This post has been specifically designed as a development opportunity for an experienced registered nurse who wishes to gain the knowledge, skills and clinical experience required to progress towards a future CNS career.
Working alongside experienced Lung Clinical Nurse Specialists, respiratory physicians, thoracic surgeons, oncologists, and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will gain exposure to the full lung cancer pathway. This includes diagnostic investigations, treatment planning, surgical and non-surgical oncology pathways, follow-up care, supportive care, and holistic patient management.
The post holder will undertake a structured development programme within the team, supported by mentorship, clinical supervision, and competency-based learning. The role is intended to provide a broad understanding of the CNS function, including patient assessment, care coordination, communication across healthcare settings, service improvement, and multidisciplinary working.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate relevant post-registration clinical experience and possess a strong clinical foundation. This experience is essential to enable the successful development of the advanced knowledge, decision-making and coordination skills required within a future Clinical Nurse Specialist role.
The successful candidate will:
Support the coordination of care for patients throughout the lung cancer pathway.
Act as a key point of contact for patients, carers and members of the multidisciplinary team.
Provide information, support and signposting to patients and those important to them.
Contribute to the delivery of personalised care, including holistic assessment and care planning.
Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and pathway discussions.
Develop knowledge and understanding of lung cancer diagnostics, treatment pathways and survivorship care.
Work collaboratively with colleagues across respiratory medicine, thoracic surgery, oncology and supportive care services.
Support service improvement, audit and quality improvement initiatives.
Develop specialist knowledge and skills under the supervision of experienced Clinical Nurse Specialists.
Please refer to the attached Job Description and Person Specification for full details of the role, responsibilities and development opportunities. This 12-month developmental secondment offers the opportunity to gain experience across the lung cancer pathway, supporting patients from diagnosis through surgical and non-surgical oncology treatments while working alongside an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist team.
