Job description

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust requires two Locum Consultants for 12 months to join the Gastroenterology team. The posts will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site with occasional cross‑site working at University Hospital Lewisham. These posts are offered on a locum basis initially to support the Trust’s expanding Gastroenterology service, with a strong possibility of becoming substantive positions in line with the Trust’s commitment to sustainable, high‑quality services for our patients.

The Trust has two acute sites: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and University Hospital Lewisham (UHL). Each site houses a busy endoscopy department performing around 9,000 procedures per year and leads bowel cancer screening across six London boroughs.

Main duties of the job

This 10 PA appointment requires the post-holder to undertake three endoscopy lists and three clinics per week and participate in the on‑call GI bleed rota.

Job description

a. Clinical Responsibilities

  • Undertake three gastroenterology clinics (12 slots: 5 new, 7 follow‑ups) each week and three mixed endoscopy sessions (12 points per list).
  • Perform high‑quality diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy.
  • Provide a high‑quality outpatient Gastroenterology service, including patient administration.
  • Attend weekly multidisciplinary meetings and monthly governance meetings.

b. Medical Education & Teaching

  • Possibly contribute to the General Medicine educational programme.
  • Act as a standard Consultant trainee for SpRs in Gastroenterology.

c. Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

  • Attend and actively participate in regular gastroenterology governance meetings.
  • Undertake high‑quality audit projects and participate in data collection to meet national quality standards.
  • Support junior doctors in audit and research projects, encouraging publication and presentations.

d. Continuing Professional Development

  • Participate in professional development at local and national levels.
  • Implement audit and research findings in clinical practice.
  • Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities locally, regionally or nationally.

e. Policy, Planning and Management

  • Lead the team as appropriate within the specialty, with responsibilities agreed individually.
  • Use resources effectively and participate in planning and development of the service.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with Trust Clinical Governance Strategy and trust policies.
  • Communicate effectively with department staff, other Trusts and external agencies.
  • Support the Trust in delivering quality patient care and in strategic planning of the service.
Person Specification – Qualifications
  • Essential – MBBS or equivalent, registered with GMC, MRCP or equivalent.
  • Desirable – Other degrees (BSc, MSc, MD), subspecialist interest, CCT for Gastroenterology and General Medicine.
Audit
  • Essential – Understand principles of audit.
  • Desirable – Evidence of participation in audit projects.
Research
  • Essential – Understanding of scientific method and literature interpretation.
  • Desirable – Evidence of personal research projects and publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
Personal Skills
  • Essential – Evidence of leadership, organisational ability, resilience, teamwork, credibility, sympathy for patients, professional relationships.
  • Desirable – Critical enquiry, postgraduate communication skills course, knowledge of NHS governance.
Management
  • Essential – Organisational ability and NHS management experience.
  • Desirable – Attendance at a National Health Service Management Course.
