Job Overview

We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual with a commitment to delivering the highest quality of care to join our well‑integrated team and contribute to the development of our service. This new post will support existing services and improvements in Gastroenterology and hepatology in Gateshead.

The post holder will work with consultant colleagues to deliver gastroenterology and/or hepatology services, including ward commitment that will support existing gastroenterology inpatient ward cover and gastroenterology outpatient service delivery. The post may support an interest in advanced endoscopy, endoscopy training, nutrition, IBD or hepatology/HPB depending on the area of interest of the successful applicant. The post holder will be expected to participate in GIM and endoscopy on call rotas.

In addition, the role offers the opportunity to be involved in teaching and training, research and audit/quality improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Provide outpatient and inpatient specialist gastroenterology and/or hepatology service including a ward commitment.
  • Participate in an emergency out of hours upper GI bleed endoscopy service.
  • Participate in the general medical rota.
  • Participate in audit and clinical governance activity related to gastroenterology in line with local and national guidance and requirements.
  • Participate constructively in departmental meetings.
  • Participate in continuing professional development, annual appraisal and risk management.
  • Encourage and participate in research activity and develop quality improvement and service development projects where practicable.
  • Involve in undergraduate & postgraduate teaching, including PACES teaching.
  • Provide clinical and educational supervision for Resident doctors.
  • Opportunity to act as clinical tutor and academic mentor for medical students.
  • Potential opportunity to develop and supervise advanced care practitioners specialising in gastroenterology and hepatology.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Registered medical practitioners, on or eligible to join the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.
  • All references from current and previous employers must cover a minimum of 3 years of employment; address, telephone number and work email address of each line manager needed.
  • Successful applicants must pay for their DBS certificate if a check is required for the post; this will be deducted from monthly pay over a maximum of three months.
  • Register or be registered with the DBS update service where a DBS is required.
  • All new entrants to the NHS will be appointed on the minimum pay scale in line with Terms & Conditions.
