Job description
Overview

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust have invested in the radiology team and are looking to recruit enthusiastic, motivated, skilled locum radiologists to join the team of thirteen consultant radiologists, 2 consultant sonographers and 2 consultant reporting radiographers. The successful candidate will have an interest in cross sectional imaging and any subspecialist interest will be considered, with a particular emphasis on non-vascular intervention, paediatrics and nuclear medicine. An ability to undertake non-vascular interventional procedures in a busy DGH would be an advantage; any subspecialist interest will be considered. All other subspecialties will be considered depending on application volume and fulfilment of the posts.

Job Plan and Responsibilities

The proposed job plan typically is 10 programmed activities. Part-time consultants are welcome to apply with a minimum part-time pattern of 6 programmed activities. The successful candidate would support a cancer MDT with appropriate preparation time. Responsibilities include CT and MR reporting, general and subspecialist reporting; ultrasound plus or minus some interventional activity and a small amount of plain film reporting. The Trust supports 1.5 SPA for personal development and individual quality with a further negotiable PA time for educational supervision or lead roles (e.g., REALM lead, Audit lead, Guideline lead, and modality leads).

Main duties of the job
  1. These posts are offered as a 10 PA (session) basis, subject to work schedule, agreed arrangements for organisation, and mutual agreement with the Clinical Lead.
  2. Part-time working pattern (minimum 6 PA) is negotiable based on mutual agreement and demand of the service and requires prior agreement with departmental management.
  3. The direct clinical care (DCC) includes emergency work, outpatient activities, multi-disciplinary meetings about direct patient care and administration related to the above. The supporting professional activities (SPA) include participation in training, medical education, continuous professional development, formal teaching, audit, clinical management and local clinical governance activities.
  4. This will typically consist of 10 sessions which will vary according to the experience and expertise of the candidate and departmental requirements.
  5. Additional SPA can be negotiated for extra Trust directed activity (e.g., educational supervision, clinical tutor, audit lead appraiser duties, max 0.5 SPA).
  6. The department offers a 7-day imaging service. Consultants are resident on site until 8pm Monday to Friday on a rotational basis, and Saturday/Sunday for 6 hours.
  7. Consultants are not expected to be on site during their SPA time but must be able to attend within a reasonable time in an emergency.
  8. The job plan will be reviewed at 3 months and 6 months depending on the needs of the candidate and department. Further review is on an annual basis.

Job responsibilities
  1. To play an active role in the Radiology Service and share responsibility for the provision of appropriate services and advice with other Consultant Radiologists.
  2. Support of 7-day working, including resident on-site Radiologist on weekdays until 8pm and Saturday/Sunday on a rotational basis.
  3. Communication and liaison with other departments within the hospital, both clinical and managerial.
  4. Communication and liaison with external agencies including emergency services, GP Surgeries and Urgent Care Centres, tertiary trauma centres.
  5. Leading clinically on a modality within your area of subspecialist interest.
  6. Supervision, training and education of junior medical staff, with an active role in training radiographic, nursing and other staff.
  7. Managing personnel and other managerial issues including prioritisation of imaging requests.
  8. Continuing development of the service using audit, evidence-based medicine, IT infrastructure development, mentorship, and development of evidence-based pathways within your area of expertise.
  9. Support a culture of learning from excellence and from mistakes/errors, including active contribution to REALM meetings.
  10. Support the wider organisation in medical professional matters.
  11. Work collaboratively with other organisations within the Black Country STP.
Qualifications and experience

Essential: GMC Registration; FRCR or Equivalent; MBChB, MBBS or Equivalent.

Desirable: Radiology Subspecialty fellowship exams; MRCP, MRCS, Royal College additional exams; Post Graduate Degrees (Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate).

Experience: Essential: Evidence of Higher Specialty Experience/Training in Clinical Radiology; Evidence of Radiology Subspecialty Interest; Prior experience in Audit and/or research. Desirable: Evidence of Subspecialty Experience in Paediatrics, Non-vascular intervention & Nuclear Medicine; Subspecialty Training in other interests; 6 months UK experience at registrar or consultant level; Evidence of radiology Specialist registration (CCT or CESR).

Knowledge & Personal Qualities: Essential: Sound clinical judgement; good interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team. Desirable: Evidence of research experience and publications; good personal insight and ability to manage constructive criticism; ability to use evidence base, quality improvement and clinical audit to support decision making.
