Job summary

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and committed Paediatrician, who will join our established team of general paediatricians. This post is for a fixed term of 12 months. We are seeking applicants with an interest in safeguarding but additional special interests including the following will be considered.

  • Paediatric high dependency care
  • Rheumatology
  • Respiratory
  • Immunology
  • Gastroenterology

The appointment of the additional colleague will go some way in enhancing senior consultant presence in clinical areas and support 2 consultants to be present and providing acute clinical cover during the working week. There are no routine middle grade responsibilities attached to the post, but the post holder may be required to cover clinical areas without middle grade input or assist in covering clinical areas when availability of middle grades is reduced, for example during regional training days or sickness absence.

Main duties of the job

The newly appointed consultant will join the team of existing consultants to deliver a high quality emergency and elective paediatric service.

Clinical responsibilities

The post has clinical responsibilities covering services to children within the Acute Trust in conjunction with the other Consultants working as a team providing elective and emergency children’s acute service for children of North Northamptonshire.

The Consultants operate a Paediatrician/neonatal consultant of the week rota for the Children’s wards. The Paediatrician of the week is responsible for all paediatric in‑patient admissions during the week and for all paediatric emergencies during regular working hours, with out‑of‑hour on‑call shared amongst the consultant colleagues.

A separate consultant covers the neonatal unit from 9 AM to 5 PM during the working week and a split on‑call rota. All paediatric and neonatal consultants partake in a shared rota covering the paediatric assessment unit 0900‑1700hrs; 5 days/ week.

Oncall

On‑call paediatric consultant attends handover ward round when on‑call weekend on‑call are split with one consultant covering Friday and Sunday and is then duty paediatrician for the following week. A second consultant is on call for the Saturday. During on‑calls on‑site presence will be from 1700 to 2200 hrs with on‑call from home till 08:30. Consultant of the week is on call from 0830 till 1800 with additional hour (1700‑1800) for handovers and urgent reviews. The consultant is expected to do ward rounds on Saturday and Sunday mornings and provide on‑site cover from 0900 to 1500 hours.

Children and Young People Services are part of the Family health Division, led by a Chief of Division, a Divisional Director and Head of Nursing. Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology are each led by a Clinical Director.

The Paediatric ward relocated in May 2013 into the purpose built ‘Foundation Wing’ housing the new paediatric Skylark Ward and paediatric assessment unit. The Paediatric Assessment Unit has been successful in reducing short term acute admissions to the children’s wards. It is now co‑located alongside the inpatient facility. In addition, two high dependency beds were established, and further cohesion achieved by the close proximity to ITU and theatres.

Our Neonatal Unit is returning to a level 2 or ‘Local’ neonatal unit from September. It is part of the East Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (EMNODN) and is designated to provide intensive care for gestations twenty‑seven weeks and above. Our cot numbers are 2 intensive care, 6 high dependency, and 8 special care cots.

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 a year per annum.
