Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Paediatric Hepatology department for 6 months. The Paediatric hepatology team provide a comprehensive range of tertiary paediatric hepatology services such as acute and chronic liver disease, portal hypertension and intrahepatic lesions. Examples include acute liver failure, biliary disease or structural abnormalities, metabolic liver disease, viral hepatitis, autoimmune disorders, cystic fibrosis, NAFLD, congenital hepatic fibrosis and Wilson's disease.

Outreach clinics are currently provided with colleagues in Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle and Glasgow.

There is a multidisciplinary team of specialist clinical nurses, transplant coordinators, dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, youth workers and play therapists.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will join a team of four consultants with a 1 in 5 on-call requirement on a 10 PA contract. There are opportunities to develop a specialised interest of the candidates’ choice and for the post to be extended if it suits service needs.

The Paediatric Hepatology Department in Leeds is a National Specialist Service for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and follow‑up of children with a wide range of acute and chronic liver disease, portal hypertension and intrahepatic lesions. The department has close relationships with other specialties including cardiology, nephrology, haematology, oncology, and rheumatology for joint management of multisystem disorders. The service receives approximately 300 new patients per year and performs 20 transplants, of which an increasing number are from live donors.

Job Responsibilities

The post holder will join the existing consultant team in delivering the specialist Paediatric Hepatology and Liver Transplant Service. The post holder will strive to ensure that the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust maintains and improves its standing nationally and delivers high‑quality patient care within the framework of the NHS.

This post offers an exciting opportunity to work flexibly within the department. It requires a commitment to close team working so as to offer timely interventions for patients. As well as fixed clinical commitments, the post holder will contribute to the Annual teamwork plan to ensure the service is delivered continuously.

  1. To deliver care to patients under the care of the Paediatric Hepatology team:
    • Out‑patient clinics
    • Supervision of patients
    • Care of in‑patients as part of a 1:5 on‑call rota
    • Contribute to Specialist Multi‑Disciplinary Team meetings
  2. To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Children's CSU and across the Trust.
  3. To work with colleagues in Paediatric Hepatology to deliver acute on‑call (1:5). This includes both out‑of‑hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.
  4. To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Paediatric Hepatology department.
    • Take on and develop outreach clinics, and participate in the various general and sub‑specialty hepatology out‑patient clinics based on site at Leeds.
    • Assist the Paediatric Liver Transplant Surgeons and Paediatric Hepatobiliary Surgeon in delivery of an emergency and elective hepatobiliary and liver transplant supra‑regional service, as recommended by NHS England.

Experience
Essential
  • Completed a recognised training programme in paediatric Hepatology
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research
  • Undergraduate medical training in English or achievement of a minimum score of 7 across all 4 categories in the academic International English Language Testing System
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors
  • Well organised and skilled in good time management
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit
  • Understanding of current issues in the NHS
  • Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and to be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary
  • Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice)

  • Hold full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
