Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust seeks a Consultant General Surgeon to deliver a broad general and emergency surgery service. The post involves elective and acute gallbladder surgery, hernia repair and benign colorectal disease, with advanced laparoscopic skills desirable, and on-call responsibilities.

The appointee will assess outpatients, triage fast-track referrals, and participate in CEPOD acute operating lists and weekday hot clinics.

Job description

The successful candidate will be expected to take up a post as a Consultant General Surgeon and would be expected to undertake a wide variety of general and emergency general surgery. The post holder would be expected to be skilled in both elective and acute gallbladder surgery, hernia repair and benign colorectal disease. Proficiency in advanced laparoscopic operating is desirable. As part of the department the post holder would be expected to provide assessment to outpatients with a wide variety of conditions and would be expected to partake in the triage and investigation of fast track referrals. The post holder would be expected to be Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JAG) Accredited in Lower and/or Upper GI endoscopy. The Gastrointestinal (GI) surgeons run the general surgical on call service (colorectal and upper gastrointestinal) which is currently a 1 in 14 rota. During periods on call the post holder will be freed up from all elective activity in order to run the surgical assessment unit and to triage and treat all acute surgical referrals. The post holder will also partake in a 1 in 14 rota to provide CEPOD acute operating lists and weekday hot clinics. Familiarity with the management of general surgical pathology, both upper and lower GI, would therefore be essential.
