Position

Overview

The Consultant Team works from a group job plan. Each consultant will agree an individualisation of the group job plan with the service Clinical Leads/Directors and Clinical Care Group Director annually, on behalf of the Chief Executive.

The department supports individually designed job plans that fulfil clinical responsibilities while allowing each consultant to develop academic and professional interests both within and external to the trust.

The post holder will undertake clinical and non-clinical duties in the adult emergency department.

Responsibilities

All consultants will assume responsibility both singly and corporately for the management of junior medical staff and for the professional development of trainees. Consultants must be aware of Trust policies & targets and provide a role model in achieving these corporate objectives.

  • Primary Clinical Care: Undertake direct clinical care of undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Departments.
  • Team Leader: Act as team leader coordinating the acute resuscitation or patients presenting to the resuscitation room with major trauma, cardiac arrest and major medical emergencies.
  • Area Led: Manage clinical areas of the department overseeing the management of all patients in that area and supporting the medical and nursing team members working in that area.
  • Work in all areas of the department including RAFTing, Resus, Majors and CDU/SDEC.
  • Emergency Physician in Charge: Work in collaboration with the Nurse in charge to ensure proper running of the Emergency Department and maintenance of high standards of clinical care, patient safety, and patient experience throughout the department. Ensure patient care is delivered in line with National Key Performance Indicators for Emergency Care.
  • The night consultant resident at Queens Hospital will provide advice and guidance to the Senior Clinician in Charge at King George Hospital.
Non-Clinical Duties
  • The development of quality improvement schemes, risk management and clinical audit.
  • Planning and delivering the provision of the service, including how work will be organised.
  • Recruitment of junior medical staff and other appropriate staff for the department.
