An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated Locum/Fixed-TermConsultant Gastroenterologist to join an expanding, forward-thinking NHS team based in Cumbria.
The department delivers comprehensive, integrated care across inpatient and outpatient settings, supported by a newly opened £15M, state-of-the-art, JAG-accredited 5-room Endoscopy Suite. We provide advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (including ERCP and complex polypectomy), a dedicated 24/7 GI bleed service, and specialist services in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Hepatology, and Bowel Cancer Screening.
This post will support the inpatient "Consultant of the Week" model, outpatient clinics, endoscopy lists, and the emergency GI bleed rota, with ample scope to develop or pursue a sub-specialist clinical interest.
Inpatient Care: Participate in the shared "Consultant of the Week" rota overseeing acute gastroenterology beds, in‑reach assessments, and referrals across acute admissions units and general wards.
Endoscopy Services: Undertake scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy sessions, utilising modern scope systems, electrosurgery, and haemostatic modalities.
Emergency Service: Actively contribute to the 24/7 on‑call emergency GI bleeding service rota.
Outpatient Clinics: Conduct two outpatient clinics per week covering general gastroenterology and relevant specialist clinics (e.g., IBD, Hepatology).
Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Working: Actively participate in regional and specialist MDTs, including Lower GI, UGI, HPB, IBD, and Clinical Nutrition.
Quality Improvement & Governance: Engage in clinical audit, incident reporting, peer review, and service development to maintain high clinical standards.
Teaching & Supervision: Teach and mentor undergraduate medical students, postgraduate trainees, foundation doctors, and Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs).
(A formal job plan will be mutually agreed upon appointment; elective activities are stood down during on‑call weeks)

Clinical Administration: 1 session
Clinical Governance & Audit: 1 session
Supporting Professional Activities (SPA): 2 sessions
Specialist Interest / In‑Reach: 1 session
Registration: Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
Specialist Register: Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology / General Internal Medicine, or eligibility for inclusion within 6 months of the interview date.
Qualifications: MRCP (UK) or recognised equivalent.
Clinical Experience: Demonstrable competence and independent decision‑making in clinical gastroenterology and acute GI bleed management (therapeutic endoscopy).
Clinical Governance: Demonstrated experience and active participation in clinical audit, patient safety initiatives, and quality improvement.
Communication: Exceptional communication, multidisciplinary collaboration, and leadership skills.
Mobility & Residence: Willingness to travel across clinical sites in Cumbria as required and ability to reside within a commutable distance (under 30 minutes for emergency rota cover).
