Overview

Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust welcomes applications for a fully qualified newborn hearing screener in the Maternity Unit of Royal Berkshire Hospital. The role involves performing hearing screenings for all babies born in the Berkshire area, consulting with parents, and entering data into the National Screening database. This position is based in Reading and is part of a comprehensive national programme that identifies newborn hearing loss for early intervention.

Responsibilities
  • Explain and perform newborn hearing screening tests to babies and parents.
  • Provide screening results to families and record data accurately in the National Screening database.
  • Liaise with other healthcare professionals, the Newborn Hearing Screening Manager, and outreach clinics.
  • Maintain and manage screening equipment and ensure quality of service.
  • Cover busy post‑natal wards, clinics, and outreach clinics alone when required.
  • Remain calm and methodical under pressure, prioritise workload to ensure all babies are screened.
  • Use computer‑based e‑learning modules and attend clinical assessments as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • GCSE Grade C (or equivalent) in Maths and English.
  • Basic computer skills – Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Full clean driving licence and access to a vehicle for outreach clinics.
  • Experience in a hospital environment and infant handling skills.
Desirable Criteria
  • Completion of NHSP e‑learning modules.
  • NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Newborn Hearing Screening.
  • Minimum 6 months of experience in the health care sector within the last five years.
  • Prior experience working with infants or young children in a health, childcare or community‑care setting.
  • Previous experience of NHSP.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the auditory system.
  • Deaf awareness.
Working Hours

Full‑time 5 days per week (37.5 hours) on a rota basis. Regular 7.5‑hour shifts, typically 08:00‑16:00. The service operates 7 days a week, 364 days per year, with weekend and bank‑holiday work required. Shift patterns are dependent on service needs and may include outreach clinics in the Berkshire area.
