Live out Head Gardener job in Berkshire

This is wonderful opportunity for a Head Gardener, who is hands on, creative, enthusiastic and a natural leader, who leads by example and be a team player. This is a stunning and prestigious garden at the heart of a traditional country estate. The ideal candidate will need to have an eye for detail and the ability to deliver projects to the highest standards. He will lead a team of 4 other gardeners.

This role would really suit someone who is confident to have overall responsibility for managing and maintaining the gardens and grounds to the most impeccable standards, oversee projects and to ensure its impeccable beauty is maintained

This Head Gardener will need to have relevant qualifications as well as solid experience. PA1/PA6 spraying certificates are desirable.

Some of the duties are:

  • Full care & maintenance of flowers, shrubs, trees, lawns, hedges, topiary, orchards, rose gardens, lake.

  • Planting, transplanting, fertilising, pruning, spraying, weeding, watering & managing pests & diseases.

  • Implementing & maintaining detailed landscape & seasonal planting plans.

  • Overseeing irrigation systems & ensuring efficient water management, in particular to minimise the effect of climate change.

  • Maintenance of garden structures, equipment & supplies; safe use of machinery including tractors & vehicles.

  • General groundskeeping: mowing, mulching, strimming, raking, snow clearance & upkeep of paths & driveways.

  • Managing team of gardeners through training & mentoring, ensuring high standards & professional development.

  • Budget control: keeping accurate expense records, budgets & reconciliations.

  • Ordering plants & goods.

  • Greenhouse management & propagation of flowers, fruit & vegetables

  • Supporting ad hoc estate project work.

  • Ensuring the teamwork within the health & safety guidelines as laid down by the employer

  • Maintenance of London property terrace garden.

  • Liaising closely with the Senior Property Manager to deliver the owner’s vision for the garden.

The principal wants someone who is highly organised, has strong managerial skills but also has a creative flair when it comes to the garden work.

Start: As and when the right person is found.

Working week: Monday to Friday, 40/45 hour week with some flexibility when principals are in residence

Driving: essential

Salary: £47,000 GPA + with 25 days holidays plus Bank holidays
