A Basic DBS is required for this role.

The role

On behalf of a local council, we are seeking an experienced local government lawyer to join the Litigation and Planning Team. You will manage a varied caseload including civil and criminal litigation, unauthorised encampments, highways and education. You will be expected to offer supervision to junior members of the team. The candidate should have excellent written and verbal skills and substantial experience of working in litigation for local government. You must be willing to learn new areas of law to provide fast paced legal advice on a range of topics. Previous Local Government experience is essential; County Council experience is desirable.

What the client is looking for
  • Law Society admitted and Solicitor Regulation Authority registered solicitor, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives or Bar Standards Board registered barrister
  • Specialist in an area of law as required. A thorough knowledge of that area of law, good advocacy skills and considerable experience in case management is essential, along with demonstrable experience in a particular field
  • Adequate experience of managing own workload
  • Ability to absorb and interpret legislation, case law and procedures
  • Ability to assimilate facts and present these in a coherent fashion to facilitate the desired result for DCC
  • It is important to note the impact of incorrect advice and poor advocacy could be financially significant
  • Ability to assimilate detailed and complex information and make judgments on how procedures have been followed
  • Excellent communication and presentational skills, both verbal and written, including influencing and persuasion
  • Excellent ICT skills and a degree of administrative self-sufficiency, although some secretarial support will be provided
