A local government authority in the North East of England is seeking a qualified lawyer to support its Regulatory & Enforcement team. This role focuses on providing legal advice and advocacy in civil jurisdiction and conducting matters in criminal courts. Ideal candidates should be qualified solicitors, barristers, or CLIEx litigators with a current practicing certificate. Durham County Council is creating new opportunities in its Regulatory & Enforcement team to ensure it is equipped to deliver on the Council’s strategic vision and priorities. As part of that growth, we are looking to appoint a lawyer to support and enhance our litigation work.
The Regulatory & Enforcement Team handles a wide range of matters including civil and criminal litigation, as well as licensing and regulatory matters. The work of the team is a key component in the Council achieving the ambitions set out in its five year plan: Durham County Council, Council Plan 2025-2030.
As an in-house local government lawyer you will work closely with Councillors and with officers across the whole range of the Council’s activities, providing legal advice, assistance and advocacy. The focus of your role will be on work in the civil jurisdiction, however you may also be required to conduct matters in the criminal courts and to advise Council committees. You may also be involved in undertaking work for schools and other bodies.
You will be joining a supportive and collaborative team that strives to work together effectively, share knowledge and support each other’s success.

You should be a Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or CLIEx Litigator and Chartered Legal Executive Advocate (Civil) with current practising certificate, or be about to qualify having completed all academic stages.
