Job summary

Formative, a leading global commodities group, is looking for a Legal Counsel to join its Group Legal team in London, supporting the commodity trading and shipping business.

This is a great opportunity for an in-house or private practice lawyer with strong commodities experience to join a high-performing legal team advising on complex, cross-border transactions across a variety of commodities and countries.

Qualifications

• 6+ years PQE in commodities, with in-house or private practice background.
• Experience in commodity trading & shipping essential.
• Strong drafting and negotiation skills for cross-border agreements.
• Familiarity with international instruments and trading standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice to the commodity trading and shipping businesses.
• Advise on governance requirements and support stakeholders in navigating them.
• Work closely with a team of experienced lawyers within Marketing and the broader Group Legal function.
• Manage relationships with key external stakeholders, including law firms.

The role:

• Provide legal advice to the commodity trading and shipping businesses
• Advise on governance requirements and support stakeholders in navigating them
• Work closely with a team of experienced lawyers within Marketing and the broader Group Legal function
• Manage relationships with key external stakeholders, including law firms

What we're looking for:

• Minimum 6 years PQE, ideally with in-house experience in commodity trading & shipping
• Strong negotiation and drafting experience on cross-border commodity trading agreements
• Familiarity with international legal instruments and trading standards
• Confident operating autonomously in a fast-paced, global sales and trading environment
