Job description
Lecturers in Health/Clinical (mental health)/Social Psychology x 3

The School of Psychology, University of Southampton, is seeking to appoint three permanent lecturers in health, clinical or social psychology to grow our research and contribute to delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate education.

We are seeking applications from individuals whose expertise will help us build capacity as part of an ongoing programme of strategically focussed investment, aligned with our four research centres (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/research/areas/psychology ). We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose research can contribute to one or more of our cross-centre thematic priorities in adult and child mental health (e.g., mood/anxiety disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions, psychosis), digital interventions and health technologies, and individual, relational, and collective self (e.g., personality and wellbeing, relationship processes and sexual behaviour, culture and intergroup relations).

You will hold a doctorate in psychology or relevant discipline, be able to evidence excellence in research and teaching in the areas highlighted above commensurate with your level, and share our ambition to deliver high quality research, education, and training in psychological science.

Successful applicants will benefit from working in a vibrant, world-leading, research intensive Russell Group university. The school provides an excellent environment for career development allowing for 40% research time on balanced (research and education) pathway contracts, and state-of-the-art research facilities that include: well-established clinical-academic links with NHS services, and purpose-built laboratories for psychometric testing, social interaction and behavioural observation, quantitative sensory testing, therapeutic intervention, psychopharmacology, and child/family studies. Specialist neuroscience facilities include 3T MRI, EEG, neurostimulation, eye-tracking, virtual reality labs as well as established links with the School of Biological Sciences, School of Medicine (Psychiatry, Clinical Neuroscience, Primary Care) and local/regional NHS neurological and rehabilitation services. Our strategic partnerships with schools, NHS Trusts, Government, charities and industry deliver world leading impact (REF2021) and attract significant grant income from all major research funders. The school also provides opportunities for the award of funds to support research activity including PhD studentships, networking, conference attendance and equipment/lab facilities, as well as regular active seminar programmes of invited external speakers in each research centre. Our BPS/HCPC accredited education provision spans both single and joint-honours UG and a range of PGT (including MSc Health and Clinical Psychology) and CPD courses. We also offer professional doctoral training programmes in Clinical (DClinPsy) and Educational DEdPsy) Psychology.

We are an ambitious, successful and growing School (Top 10 nationally; Guardian League Table 2025) providing a friendly, supportive and inclusive working environment located on the beautiful Highfield Campus at the University of Southampton. We strongly encourage applications from candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, people who identify as LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities. We recognise that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance, including flexible and part-time working. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness. The University of Southampton holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award.

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work. With a generous holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days we are committed to supporting our staff and students and open to a flexible working approach.
