£41,220 – £47,728 per annum. Permanent. 37 hours per week. Reporting to Senior Lecturer. Department: Centre for Academic Persistence.

Working Arrangement

Hybrid. 3–4 days on campus per week (Birmingham). Travel required.

About the Centre for Academic Persistence

The Centre focuses on helping and supporting students through their first‑year university journey. We run the Foundation Year, support the CertHE programme, run the On‑Track initiative for students needing level‑progression support or assistance with resitting, provide Pass First Time academic study skills, and deliver the new student orientation.

Position Overview

We are looking for a team of Lecturers to support the STEM Foundation Year across campus. Responsibilities include 16 hours of teaching (four groups), academic support, office hours, tutorials, and facilitating the cover rota. Lecturers will be required on campus 3‑4 days a week to align with the student timetable.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver engaging and dynamic lectures both face‑to‑face and online for blended and distance‑learning students.
  • Take on module leadership, ensuring consistent quality and development of learning materials and schemes of work.
  • Oversee assessment marking, create authentic assessments, and provide high‑quality feedback.
  • Lead or support the creation of new programmes and refresh existing ones to align with industry trends and employer requirements.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to provide academic advice and support to students.
  • Drive innovation in teaching methods, student support, and assessment.
  • Assist with student orientation weeks (online and face‑to‑face).
  • Support students through assessments including 1‑1s, group tutorials, and scaffolded assessment feedback sessions.
  • Track and remind students at risk of non‑submission via phone calls, online 1‑1 tutorials, and face‑to‑face assessment tutorials.
  • Work closely to develop assessment and resit clinics.
  • Develop or create interactive videos, podcasts, and activities for the VLE and in‑class.
University‑wide Initiatives
  • Support the delivery of the Pass First Time programme to STEM Foundation Year students.
About you

We look for individuals who understand the challenges to student engagement in a university setting and have experience teaching Computing and academic skills. You must be positive, empathetic, and committed to engaging students and ensuring positive outcomes.

Essential Skills / Experience
  • Master’s degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant subject.
  • Recognised HE Teaching Qualification and/or Advance HE Fellowship at FHEA/SFHEA level, or commitment to gain recognition within 12 months of appointment.
  • Evidence CPD to show your commitment to enhancing your knowledge and teaching capability, including practical teaching methods and techniques.
  • Proven experience with programming (Python, Java), database, operating systems/networking, digital business/ethics, IT project management, data analysis/Big Data/AI, cloud computing, HCI/UX/Web Development, and cyber security.
