Job description
Overview

We are looking for outstanding statisticians to expand our research base in Statistics. Applications are invited from candidates at Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader levels.

Research themes and collaborations

We welcome applications from outstanding researchers in any area of Statistics, including research areas that could link with, or build on existing strengths at St Andrews. Our primary strength in Statistics has been in Statistical Ecology, centred on the world-leading Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM). Most CREEM staff are statisticians in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, but there are also strong links with the School of Biology and links with the School of Medicine. We have recently appointed a new professor of Statistics in Bioscience, jointly with the School of Medicine, and it is anticipated that one of the posts will be in this area. We also have world-leading expertise in Experimental Design. We have growing links with the School of Computer Science in Data Science research, which we are keen to build on, and with the School of Geography and Geosciences, including Sustainable Development. There are also opportunities for collaboration with Pure and Applied Mathematics groups, for example our research group in Mathematical Biology, which was established in 2015 in connection with the appointment of the Gregory Chair in Applied Mathematics.

Education and programmes

We have strong and growing Masters programmes in Statistics, with our successful MSc in Applied Statistics and Data Mining (approx. 20 students per year) now in its tenth year, a new Masters programme in Data Science jointly with the School of Computer Science, and a PG Dip in Applied Statistics and Data Mining. We also plan to launch MScs in Ecological Statistics and in Mathematical Biology from 2018/19, and are contributing to an interdisciplinary MSc in Conservation Science from the same year.

Applications and contacts

For informal enquiries, we encourage those considering applying to contact the Head of School, Professor Thomas Neukirch (mathshos@st-andrews.ac.uk), the Deputy Head of School, Professor Ineke De Moortel (idm2@st-andrews.ac.uk) and/or Head of Statistics, Professor David Borchers (dlb@st-andrews.ac.uk) to discuss possibilities.

Applications are particularly welcome from women who are under-represented in Science posts at the University. You can find out more about Equality and Diversity at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/.
