Job description

Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Reader in Cyber Security
Department

Computer Science

Salary

Starting from £58,225, rising to £67,468

Closing date

Wednesday 30 September 2026

The Department of Computer Science wishes to appoint academic staff in cyber security. The appointments will be made at Lecturer (Assistant Professor), Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) or Reader (Associate Professor). Two positions are available with the level of employment commensurate with experience, achievements and research standing.

We are especially interested in candidates with a track record in technical areas of cyber security, including but not limited to:

  • AI assurance
  • safety-critical systems
  • verification and validation
  • secure software engineering

You will be a core member of our new Cyber Security, Safety and Governance research group, helping to shape its vision, drive its strategic development, and strengthen Bath’s position as an internationally recognised centre for cyber security. You will also have opportunities to build bridges with our established research groups in AI and Machine Learning, Human-Computer Interaction, Mathematical Foundations of Computation, and Visual Intelligence.

Our highly collaborative approach means many opportunities exist to work with researchers in the other groups and across the university, as well as with regional, national and international partners. We will work with you to support the deepening of existing collaborations and the development of new ones. You will offer us a strong research record and the ability and enthusiasm to create an engaging experience for our excellent students.

The University of Bath is based on an attractive, single-site campus that facilitates interdisciplinary research. It is a Top Ten University that is located on the edge of the World Heritage City of Bath and offers the lifestyle advantages of working and living in one of the most beautiful areas in the UK.

The lecturer will be appointed at Grade 8, Senior Lecturer and Reader will be appointed at Grade 9.

About the Role
Research

You will work with colleagues, students and researchers to develop and publish papers. You will apply for research funding to support your ideas. You will find ways of making your research available to society, for example, by working with industry, developing spinouts, collaborating with charities, influencing policymakers, or delivering talks and demonstrations to inform and excite wider audiences.

Teaching

You will lead the design and delivery of teaching for lectures, tutorials, and labs across our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. You will be educating and inspiring some of the brightest students in the country, delivering an engaging experience and a supportive programme.

Helping with the running of the department

You will have a few internal roles to help the Department run smoothly. For instance, you might help with student placements, ethics processes, recruitment and admissions or lead a research team.

About you

Our ideal candidates will hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline, along with a first degree or equivalent experience. Membership of a professional body and a higher education teaching qualification (e.g. PGCert, FHEA) are desirable.

  • You should demonstrate substantial research experience in your field, with an emerging track record for Lecturers and an established research profile with funding success for Senior Lecturers/Readers.
  • Adeep conceptual understanding of your subject, alongside experience teaching at UG/PG levels, is essential.
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to form positive collaborations and working relationships, are required.
  • Acommitment to excellence in research and teaching, student experience and ethical professional conduct is essential.
  • Senior Lecturers/Readers should also exhibit academic leadership and a clear research vision.
  • Additionally, Senior Lecturers/Readers must have current knowledge of modern teaching methodologies, including learning technologies, and a strong research strategy.
  • All roles require excellent organisational and administrative skills.

If you have any questions or you would like to talk informally about the role, please contact Professor Eamonn O’Neill, Head of Department. Contact details are available via the apply button.
