As part of Abertay University’s continued evolution of its sector‑leading programmes, we have partnered with Communication University of China (CUC) and are seeking to recruit a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Game Design and Development, based in Hainan, China.

Responsibilities

As a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Game Art and Digital Media, you will provide student‑centred teaching at undergraduate level across our joint game design and game art Honours degree provision in Hainan, China. You will support the role holder by delivering the first term of teaching materials, which will be pre‑prepared, and play a key role in evolving these materials. The first term delivery (March to July) could be co‑taught by both role holders. Local and remote support will also be available.

Qualifications

We are particularly keen to attract applicants with academic experience and professional creative skills in a number of the following areas:

  • Art asset production pipelines and design workflows
  • Character, environment, vehicle, and prop asset design
  • 3D sculpting and high‑poly workflows
  • Technical art, animation, and rigging
  • Game engine implementation and asset optimisation

Appointments will be made at the level of experience within the National Framework Agreement, with two Lecturer grades (Grade 7 and Grade 8) and a Senior Lecturer grade (Grade 9). For more information on the criteria and specific duties for each grade, please refer to the candidate brief.

Salary & Benefits

The successful candidate will be offered a market‑competitive gross salary ranging from £38,784.49 – £67,468.52 per annum, benchmarked in accordance with sector practice in China, taking into account your experience, performance and grade of the position in China. Individuals will be responsible for any worldwide taxes and social security arising on your income. This includes, but is not limited to, University income (unless otherwise agreed) and personal income such as bank interest, dividend income and rental income.

If required, support to relocate to China will be provided, including a tax briefing from our tax advisors in both your home country and China. You will receive a monthly allowance in lieu of a pension, private medical insurance for you and your accompanying dependents, and a tax‑free relocation allowance (typically 10% of your salary up to a maximum of £8,000) to support the costs of your relocation. Such costs may include, but are not limited to, flights, shipping, temporary accommodation, purchasing excess baggage and ground transportation to/from airport.

The University emphasises the importance of cultural awareness and expects you and your eligible dependents to demonstrate cultural sensitivity in all professional and personal interactions. The University may offer cultural services tax‑free, such as cultural training programs and online courses, to assist in this transition.

Any offer will be contingent upon having and retaining a valid right to work in China and providing the necessary documentation in support of this. The University will support the visa process and any associated costs for you and your dependents, defined as your spouse/partner and up to two children under the age of 18 (or up to age 21 if in full‑time education) who will live with you on a year‑round basis in China.
