Overview

Founded in 1884, Bangor University has a long tradition of academic excellence and a strong focus on the student experience. The North Wales Medical School is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced applicant for the permanent role of Lecturer in Educational Psychometrics at Bangor University.

The successful candidate will provide psychometric support, advice and guidance to the School’s activities in student assessment and selection across multiple professional programmes. The candidate will teach across the new independent Medicine programme, the teach-out phase of the current Cardiff C21 North Wales Medicine programme, and the new MPharm Pharmacy programme. The role offers an environment with support to fulfil professional ambitions and opportunities to contribute to the development and quality assurance of the new North Wales Medical School.

Responsibilities
  • Lead on the delivery and continuous development of effective, efficient means of selection assessment for the North Wales Medical School drawing on best practice from educational psychometrics.
  • Provide evidence-based statistical and psychometric analysis, and expert support for the evaluation and quality assurance of assessment and assessment data.
  • Teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of projects and students.
  • Develop teaching materials or methodologies, e.g. course design or assessment, and contribute to module coordination.
  • Provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Undertake administrative duties as designated by the Head of School or Dean of Medicine.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver routine reports and post-test analyses after each assessment, including measures of item and test reliability, student performance, and analysis by demographic and other factors.
  • Collaborate with the Dean, Programme Lead and Leads for Medical Education and assessment; liaise with Cardiff University School of Medicine on matters related to the C21N Medicine programme during teach-out and as contingency partner.
  • Develop and deliver reports on assessment practice and performance on demand, particularly for external bodies.
  • Model the effect of change, including simulations to examine impact on student and test performance.
  • Recommend changes to practice through relevant committees; design and deliver materials for presenting information to students; contribute to staff development and teaching.
  • Participate in research and scholarly activity with a medical education theme.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials; adapt to diverse student backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Carry out research supporting best evidence in assessment; undertake other reasonable activities to provide efficient service delivery.
  • Develop and deliver routine reports and post-test analyses on the Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) student selection process.
  • Provide pastoral care and academic support as Academic Mentor and Personal Tutor for Medical Students.
  • Lead group case-based learning tutorials for Year 1 and Year 2; supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
  • Contribute to development of new programmes and module coordination; maintain and develop scholarly activities; publish scholarship related to learning and teaching.
Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will study for the University’s Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/Masters in Medical Education and/or seek other professionally recognised teaching qualifications. This will be factored into the postholder’s job plan and appropriate support will be offered by the School.

  • Grade 7 - A higher degree (or equivalent) in a subject with a high statistical content, e.g. Mathematics, Psychology, Computer Science; knowledge of relevant statistical and psychometric approaches to assessment analysis.
  • Grade 8 - All Grade 7 requirements plus additional qualifications/experience, including leadership and programme development capabilities (see Additional Requirements for Grade 8).
Additional Requirements (Grade 8)
  • Provide course leadership to designated academic programmes, with attention to marketing, recruitment, programming and quality assurance.
  • Lead the development of new academic programmes addressing strategic opportunities.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
