The University of South Wales has built a strong reputation over nearly two decades of delivering high-quality criminology, policing and criminal justice education. More recently, that success has developed into a wider portfolio, including postgraduate provision, continuous professional development (CPD), crime investigation, international security and justice.

This post forms part of our continued investment in criminology, crime investigation and the wider crime, security and justice portfolio at USW. As our provision grows and we plan for the next phase of delivery, we are looking to strengthen our team with someone who brings energy, creativity, academic credibility and a genuine commitment to helping students build meaningful careers across the criminal justice sector.

We are looking for someone with strong, current and research-informed knowledge of criminology who can bring contemporary theory to life through engaging, applied and authentic learning. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of research methods and supporting students to design and evaluate ethical, robust and applied criminological research.

The successful candidate will be able to help students understand complex social problems, apply criminological ideas to real-world contexts and develop evidence-informed responses to crime, environmental crime, harm, vulnerability, justice and public protection.

This is a role for someone who thrives on innovation in learning and teaching. USW has a range of immersive and specialist learning environments, including the Hydra Simulation Suite, CIPHER Investigation Room and Crime Scene House. The successful candidate will be expected to use these spaces creatively, working with colleagues and industry partners to design realistic, challenge-based learning experiences that enable students to test ideas, analyse problems and develop research based interventions relating to contemporary crimes.

The successful candidate will also be confident in exploring the responsible use of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in criminology, education and professional practice. They will be encouraged to use creativity, digital confidence and sector insight to enthuse students, strengthen employability and support learning that reflects the changing nature of crime, justice and society.

The postholder will foster existing links and build new relationships with industry partners across the crime, security and justice sector. They will also contribute to scholarly activity and impact focused research that informs practice, supports innovation and helps position USW as a provider of applied, contemporary and professionally relevant criminology education.

This is a role for someone who espouses USW’s Core Values and is genuinely motivated by student success. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring energy, initiative and imagination to their teaching, and who can help students connect criminological theory with lived experience, professional practice and real-world problem-solving.

The successful candidate will be comfortable teaching both on campus and online, with the flexibility to work and teach remotely when required. They will also be able to travel locally, nationally and internationally to support learning and teaching, student events, field trips, outreach and promotional activity, including activity in schools and colleges.

The post will focus primarily on the further development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate criminology provision, while also contributing across courses in crime, security and justice.

The successful candidate will join an established team based at the Pontypridd Campus in Treforest. The team values innovation, applied learning, sector relevance and challenge-based education, and is committed to creating authentic learning experiences that prepare students fo the world of work.
