Job description

Want a role where you’re not stuck in the classroom every day?

As a Skills Coach, you’ll support young people with learning disabilities or autism on a Supported Internship programme. It’s a mix of classroom and workplace support – typically 2–3 days in the centre, and 2–3 days out job coaching. The project itself is based just a 5-minute walk from the Derngate Theatre in Northampton, so it’s right in the heart of the town.

You’ll help learners settle into placements, build their confidence, and make sure they’ve got the practical skills to succeed – including travel training (sometimes with earlier starts or later finishes, but not all the time).

What you’ll do:
  • Support learners day-to-day in their work placements.
  • Provide 1:1 coaching to build independence and workplace skills.
  • Help with travel training when needed.
  • Work with tutors, families and employers to make sure placements stick.
What you’ll need:
  • Experience working with young people with learning disabilities, autism or additional needs.
  • Patience, empathy, and the confidence to coach step by step.
  • Flexibility for travel training sessions.
  • Good communication skills with both learners and employers.

This is a 1 year maternity cover, full-time, based in Northampton. The team is well established – in fact, the last 11 people placed in the last three years are all still there and doing well. And while it’s a fixed-term contract, they try to keep good people on where they can.

If you want a hands‑on role where you’re directly helping young people become independent at work and in life, this could be the one.
