Leading Hand - Fitter / Machinist (Afternoon Shift)

RCR Mining Technologies is seeking an experienced and capable Leading Hand Fitter / Machinist to join our Welshpool Workshop. This hands‑on leadership role is ideal for a skilled tradesperson who enjoys guiding others, improving processes, and delivering high‑quality machining work in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment.

Reporting to the Machining Supervisor, you will oversee daily workshop activities, support machinists and apprentices, and ensure all machining operations on borers, lathes, drills and mills are completed safely, accurately and efficiently.

About the Role

As the Leading Hand Fitter / Machinist, you will allocate work, coordinate labour and resources, and provide technical guidance to your team. You will ensure all machining tasks are completed to the highest quality, meeting tight tolerances and production deadlines. This role also plays a key part in maintaining equipment, supporting apprentice development, and promoting continuous improvement across the workshop.

Key Responsibilities
  • Allocate labour, materials and equipment to meet delivery, quality and commercial requirements
  • Mentor and monitor apprentices to support strong learning outcomes
  • Ensure compliance with RCR Health, Safety and Environmental policies
  • Lead daily pre‑start meetings and communicate work allocations
  • Prepare job cards, materials and resources ahead of scheduled work
  • Monitor machining methods and drive best‑practice manufacturing processes
  • Verify material checks, dimensional inspection records and quality documentation
  • Maintain accurate job identification on all parts and materials
  • Track job progress and escalate issues impacting delivery dates
  • Ensure adherence to employee start/finish times and report non‑conformance
  • Maintain the work centre schedule with up‑to‑date progress information
  • Secure the premises and ensure shutdown of non‑essential equipment at end of shift
  • Provide coverage during supervisor absences and liaise with management
  • Promote and contribute to business development opportunities
  • Drive continuous improvement and eliminate inefficiencies
  • Ensure machine shop equipment is maintained and coordinate repairs where required
  • Assist other divisions and business units to support broader RCR objectives
  • Perform additional duties as directed, within skills and competency levels
Qualifications
  • Australian recognised Trade Qualification – Machining
  • Australian Driver’s Licence
  • High Risk Work Licence – Forklift "Dogging" or Basic Rigging
  • Experience operating one or more of the following:
    • Manual Milling Machines
    • Horizontal Borers
    • CNC Mills & Lathes
  • Experience with preventive maintenance on machining equipment
  • Strong commitment to safe work practices and teamwork
  • Previous experience in a Leading Hand or leadership role
  • Experience manufacturing mining equipment
  • Experience machining hydraulic cylinder components
  • Basic computer literacy
