DWP. Digital with Purpose.

DWP is the UK's largest government department. We help people into work, and make payments worth over £195bn a year to support some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

We are looking for a Lead Technical Architect to join our community of tech experts in DWP Digital. We're driving a once-in-a-generation transformation of government services.

We're using fresh ideas and leading-edge technologies to build and maintain innovative, scalable and user-centric digital solutions that will be used by nearly every person in the UK, at key moments in their lives.

The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique. We'd love you to join us.

Delivery. Work. Projects.

Responsibilities
  • Lead architecture design for Management Information (MI) and Analytics services, two strategic capabilities that support thousands of users, from operational teams to ministers. You'll work across complex digital environments, combining sensitive data handling, cloud security and live service integration.
  • Manage a small team of architects and guide the design of solutions that meet user needs, align with strategy, and support digital transformation.
  • Collaborate with engineers, policy teams, legal, and cross-government colleagues to ensure architecture decisions are robust, scalable and secure.
  • Provide expert advice on tooling, drive resolution of technical and data debt, and ensure architecture artefacts are delivered to high standards.
  • Help shape best practice and share reference architectures across DWP Digital.
What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
  • Architecture Across Environments - You can design architecture across on-prem, cloud, and hybrid environments, covering networking, security, presentation, middleware, database, and integration layers.
  • Principled Architecture Design - You can apply architecture principles, patterns, technical radars, and standards to guide consistent and scalable design decisions.
  • End-to-End Delivery Support - You can work with project teams across agile, waterfall, and hybrid environments, supporting architecture design from initial concept through to go-live.
  • Business-to-Technical Translation - You can translate business requirements into technical solutions with clear traceability that stakeholders can understand and validate.
  • Architecture Modelling - You can use architecture modelling techniques and tools to design and communicate solutions effectively.
  • Data Integration - You can integrate data from disparate sources including ERP systems, CRM platforms, and IoT devices, using both real-time pipelines and batch processing approaches.
  • Data Security & Compliance - You can design for data privacy, disaster recovery, and backup, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and policies.
  • Analytics & Reporting - You can design and implement data warehousing and data lake solutions, and apply BI and analytics technologies like Power BI using best practices and proven design patterns.
