Job description
Overview

At Metro Bank, people come first – our culture is all about bringing the best out in our colleagues, and making sure everyone feels valued, respected, seen and included. We strongly believe in a diverse and inclusive workplace and to find the very best person for the job, we always look across a wide range of diverse communities.

What you will do

As the Lead Technical Accounting Manager, you will be responsible for providing expert technical accounting guidance across the Metro Bank Group, ensuring compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and maintaining high standards of financial integrity and control. This role will also lead the consistent application of the Group accounting policies and procedures. You’ll play a key role in hedge accounting and the wider management of financial instruments, ensuring compliance with IFRS 9 and supporting Treasury in designing and maintaining effective hedging strategies. The role requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex accounting concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Lead the assessment and documentation of complex accounting issues under IFRS
  • Develop and maintain the Group accounting policy manual, ensuring consistent application across all entities
  • Prepare technical accounting position papers for complex transactions or judgmental areas (e.g., business combinations, financial instruments, share-based payments, leases and impairment reviews)
  • Support in interpreting and implementing new accounting standards and regulatory requirements
  • Act as the key liaison point with external auditors on technical accounting matters
  • Lead the end-to-end hedge accounting process under IFRS 9
  • Support the month-end and year-end close process by reviewing technical areas of the financial statements
  • Prepare or review disclosure notes for complex accounting areas

And... we are a bank so risk is a part of everything we do. We love people who take responsibility, do the right thing for customers, colleagues and Metro Bank and have the ability to call out any concerns.

What you will need
  • Understand the risks associated with your job and what that means for you, Metro Bank and all our stakeholders
  • Significant experience in a technical accounting or financial reporting role, preferably within a retail banking or external audit environment
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS, particularly IFRS 9, IFRS 13, IFRS 15, IFRS 16, and IFRS 3
  • Demonstrable experience with hedge accounting and derivative instruments
  • Excellent MS Excel skills, with the ability to manipulate large data models and deliver meaningful outputs
  • Experience of drafting and reviewing interim and annual financial statements
  • Fully qualified accountant (ACCA, ACA) or equivalent
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and communication skills to communicate complex accounting concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality outputs under tight deadlines
Our promise to you
  • We will make sure that you are well-rewarded by providing you with a competitive salary, discretionary annual bonus, and a wide range of benefits, including generous holiday allowance, attractive pension scheme, healthcare, life assurance, and a number of colleague discounts!
  • We will give you the training to ensure you succeed in your role and plenty of internal opportunities to progress your career (around 40% of our recruitment comes from internal promotions!).
  • We are also all about balance so most of our jobs offer the opportunity for hybrid working built around your role and home life, wherever possible.

Diverse teams really are the best teams. We know that candidates (especially women, research tells us) may be put off applying for a job unless they can tick every box. We also know that ‘normal’ office hours aren’t always doable, and while we can’t accommodate every flexible working request we are happy to be asked. So if you are excited about working with us and think you can do much of what we are looking for but aren’t sure if you are 100% there yet… why not give it a whirl? Please note that sometimes we may close a job earlier for applications if we are inundated with amazing candidates. Good luck!
