Job summary

Amey Consulting Scotland is seeking a permanent Lead Senior Civil Engineer to join the Structures team. Based across our Perth, Motherwell and Edinburgh offices, this role offers 40 hours per week with flexible, hybrid/part-time working options.

You will lead design teams on major road, bridge and transportation projects, mentor junior designers, manage budgets, and contribute to bids. Chartered status or equivalent is desirable.

Qualifications

  • Experience in the relevant technical field, likely in a Senior Engineer role.
  • Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant standards.
  • Experience managing health, safety and welfare compliance per CDM Regulations.
  • Capable of acting as day-to-day main engineering contact on projects (e.g. CRE).
  • Chartered status or equivalent professional licence desirable on some contracts.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team to deliver technically sound engineering solutions that meet standards and client requirements.
  • Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation for scheme deliverables.
  • Oversee junior staff and supervise similar tasks.
  • Manage project budgets and control costs for deliverables.
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level and participate in progress meetings.
  • Contribute to bids and work-winning activities.

Amey Consulting – Lead Senior Civil Engineer

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Senior Civil Engineer to join our Consulting Structures Team. With shared office space in our Perth, Motherwell and Edinburgh we invite applications from across Scotland.

The standard hours of work are 40 hours per week, but we offer a range of flexible working practices, including hybrid, part-time and flexible working patterns. Amey Consulting Scotland Team are involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering and associated infrastructure projects across Scotland with cumulative values in excess of £1bn.

Amey manages both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, with the Southwest being awarded in 2020 and the Northeast in 2022. These are 8-year contracts, extendable up to 12 years. In addition to these long-term contracts, we also have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and established contractors across the country.

These long-term contracts provide excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional design staff at all stages of their careers to be involved in some of the most exciting and challenging engineering projects associated with Scotland’s arterial road network.

What You Will Be Doing

Our Lead Senior Civil Engineers play an important part within the Design team and alongside our client, Transport Scotland. As a Lead Senior Civil Engineer, you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of road schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers.

Responsibilities Include
  • To lead a team to product technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
  • The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme.
  • Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions
  • Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
  • Significantly contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function
  • Drive effective health and safety practices within the team
We Want To Hear From You If You Have
  • Developed experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, probably gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent
  • Able to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks
  • Experienced in undertaking project related tasks associated with the management of health, safety and welfare, e.g. Amey's Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
  • Capable of acting as day-to-day main engineering contact for a project where required under the terms of the commission, e.g. Contractor's Responsible Engineer (CRE) for Network Rail schemes
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience of design and specification process with ability to advise others (Design Team Leader for appropriate projects). Can check designs to a high standard
  • Highly experienced with relevant software and similar analytical tools. Good ability to check work produced by others
  • Has a very good understanding of CDM and risk assessment. Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
  • Capable of acting as Principal Designer for appropriate projects
  • Supervisory and people manager skills. Capable of managing a medium sized, locally based single discipline technical team, including the people manager role
  • Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts
