Job summary

The Alan Turing Institute, based in Greater London, seeks a Distinguished Scientist for Sovereign Language Modelling to provide scientific leadership and strategic direction across data pipelines, pre-training, RL and deployment. You will lead research, build partnerships with academia, government and industry, and shape impactful, responsible AI initiatives.

Qualifications

• internationally recognised leader in Natural Language Processing and/or Machine Learning with hands-on expertise in model training, reinforcement learning, distillation and efficient inference.
• proven experience leading research software and infrastructure at scale and securing significant external funding.
• ability to translate research into real-world impact and communicate complex technical work to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Set the scientific direction for Sovereign Language Modelling and define a bold research agenda.
• Build and lead a high-quality research portfolio from foundational questions to demonstrators and deployment.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams of researchers and research engineers and develop technical capabilities.
• Provide hands-on scientific leadership and ensure rigorous research practices across projects.
