Thepost holder will provide an essential leadership role within our establishedResearch Office. They will work as partof a team, support and line manage our research nurses and clinical trialsassistant, develop and monitor policies and frameworks as well as support thedelivery of our portfolio of academic and commercial research projects.They will work with the Clinical Lead for Research and Research Service Managerto ensure the highest quality research and research education can be supportedand delivered in NHS primary care sites in South Yorkshire. They willliaise with external/partner organisations such as the NIHR CRN, NHS trusts andGP practices.
Main duties of the job
It is essential that the successful candidate:-
- Isa first level registered nurse with evidence of continuing professionaldevelopment
- Canshow evidence of working in a research role within an NHS organisation
- Hasknowledge of the informed consent process, good clinical practice and ethicsand research governance
- Hasexperience of policy and framework development and monitoring.
- Candemonstrate leadership skills including being capable of setting the vision andleading research nurses, practitioners and admin staff
- Hasexperience of mentorship and clinical and non-clinical training and development
- Is self-confidentand able to motivate and inspire and instil confidence in a range ofstakeholders.
- Candemonstrable capability and capacity for managing complex deliverables at asenior level.
- Hasexcellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with a varietyof stakeholders: patients who have been diagnosed with a serious/terminalillness, carers, GPs, health professionals, and Clinical Trial Managers.
- Theability to prioritise competing priorities, making difficult decisions andmanage a varied workload, meeting trial related targets.
- Candemonstrate experience of embedding effective governance, accountability anddemonstrates the ability to delivery complex programmes and projects with multiorganisational partnerships and collaborations

Job responsibilities
The LeadNurse (Research) has a key management and leadership role in clinicalgovernance and leadership of the research nurses and clinical trialsassistants.
The postholder will:
- Combinetheir leadership with the delivery of our clinical research portfolio to ensuresafe and effective research practice within the organisation.
- Work tofurther develop the Research Office and its staff to support all strands of theservice's ambitions, including developing and monitoring governance frameworks.
- Work withthe Clinical Lead and Research Service Manager will actively horizon scan forboth academic and commercial study opportunities.
- They willensure all studies are delivered to an outstanding level, integrating researchinto clinical care, developing the personnel to the highest of standards, andgrowing the capacity and capabilities of the primary care research team.
- Will beresponsible for leading the delivery of high-quality research and excellentpatient experience, through proactive clinical and professional leadership, andbuilding collaborations.
- Provideexcellent management, support, and professional development for all researchstaff in the service to promote recruitment and retention of skilled andmotivated staff and achieve excellent performance in research studies.
- The rolewill have no budgetary responsibility; however, will be expected to contributeto innovative solutions to workforce and capacity management.
MainDuties and Responsibilities
Asa Lead Nurse for Research, your main duties will include:
1.Research and Patient Care
- Ensure that delivery of studies meets targets/KPIsincluding identifying and sourcing appropriate /resources
- Demonstrate a detailed knowledge and understanding ofdifferent research designs and methodologies and the regulatory and legalframeworks related to clinical research studies.
- Provide comprehensive advice and guidance on mattersrelating to protocol design, research ethics and governance.
- Lead in planning, conducting, and supervisingresearch.
- Overall responsibility for the day-to-day management ofthe research nurses.
- Take the lead on developing and updating SOPs andresearch processes within the designated area
- Ensure that local policies, procedures, and bestpractices are followed by all members of the research team.
- Ensure that Good Clinical Practice & researchgovernance standards for clinical research studies are adhered to andmaintained.
- Develop and implement strategies to overcome barriersof recruitment to studies and ensure each study has an efficient and effectivedelivery plan in place, running smoothly.
- Take an active and leading role in local and nationalforums and networks related to clinical research.
- Lead on a supportive internal audit programme forresearch studies to ensure compliance with scientific protocols, regulatorystandards, and to maintain a high quality of delivering clinical research.
- Manage the implementation of preventative andcorrective action plans arising from research audits or inspections, and in theconduct of regular informal (supportive) study spot checks to ensure regulatorystandards are met.
- Organise/attend site selection meetings, siteinitiation meetings, and other relevant meetings, and capitalise onopportunities to increase the trials' success as well as build relationshipsand market the team/units services to sponsor contacts.
- Ensure that the clinical study protocols and relatedstudy SOPs the team is working on are adhered to and that research does notdeviate from them.
- Autonomously manage your own caseload of researchstudies/patients as appropriate, to maintain your clinical and research skills.
- Ensure the studies are run to excellent standards,including providing accurate study data in a timely manner.
- Manage patients/participants' pathways while they areon research studies.
- Ensure the safe administration of treatments and drugsthat are given within the context of a clinical research study.
- Build collaborative links across the Sheffield andSouth Yorkshire with other research clusters/units/teams/staff, taking the leadon research initiatives, projects, or programmes of work, and building thepositive research culture at PCS.
- Promote the continueddevelopment of research awareness, research competence, and scholastic activity(e.g., writing for publishing, critical appraisal, and presenting atconferences) in the application of research into nursing practice.
2.Staff management anddevelopment
- Provideline management for research nursing staff and lead on developing jobdescriptions, recruitment, induction, appraisal, training and development andretention of research staff.
- Assist theService Manager in managing sickness and absence, disciplinary and performanceissues that may arise.
- Complywith PCS staff management policies and procedures
- Developand implement an innovative, outstanding research training and developmentprogramme to grow the capacity and capability of the Service staff, maximisingstaff retention and education.
- Ensurethat regular training needs analysis for staff are undertaken, with signpostingto appropriate opportunities and development and delivery of training tosupport patient safety and expert practice.
- Recogniseand respond to factors which impinge upon staff morale, delivery of researchand standards of care.
- Investigateand influence the potential for establishing new initiatives and roles forResearch Nurses, and to contribute to their development, liaising withstakeholders to create innovative opportunities.
- Assist theClinical Lead to support, signpost and facilitate opportunities for researchstaff to develop their own research.
- Ensurethat staff are deployed in a cost-effective way and that controls are in placeto meet key workforce performance indicators on sickness absence reduction andstaff retention.

4. Operational and Business Management
- Day-to-daymanagement of the research nurses and work plans.
- Provideoperational leadership for research, ensuring there is a clear framework forthe delivery of high-quality care and clinical research and that best practiceis maintained at all times.
- Liaisewith external agencies and internal departments to promote and facilitate theestablishment of new research studies and/ or services.
- Developand implement local strategies to increase the number of commercial trials openas well as the total number of patients recruited to commercial trials.
- Supportthe development and submission of research grant applications to bothcommercial and non-commercial funders to grow our home-grown study portfolio.
- GoodClinical Practice, Research and Clinical Governance, Health and Safety, DataProtection, Infection Control, and Ethics
- Prepareand deliver reports as requested.
- Liaise anddevelop excellent working relationships with stakeholders to ensure issues areresolved in a timely manner.
- As part of the research office and inpartnership with the Clinical Lead and Service Manager, organise, lead on, andattend relevant Research Committees and forums, making recommendations on thefeasibility of studies, including the level and type of resource your deliveryteam can provide/is required, and the financial arrangements

- Providemanagement cover within the Research team.
- Coordinatethe resolution of complaints, conflicts, and issues from patients and/or staffin a timely manner in line with PCS policies
