Job summary

A support organization for men in Cardiff is looking for a dedicated support officer to assist individuals who have experienced domestic abuse. Job description

It is essential that the successful candidate has a driver's licence and access to a vehicle or is currently learning to drive.

What is great about the role

Our fantastic team in Cardiff provide temporary supported accommodation for males who have experienced domestic abuse. Our focus is to provide a safe environment in which to deliver support to develop people's skills and confidence, engage with relevant specialist services appropriate to the individual's needs and encourage independence. Our clients are 16 male, motivated to change and willing to engage with solutions focused housing related support.

Our focus as a service is to support our customers in leading successful, independent lives and to feel safe in their homes and communities. You will motivate and encourage clients to participate in the community and to promote the achievement of life skills and social skills. You will work flexibly as part of a team to develop, implement and review support plans and risk management plans based on individual needs, preferences and aspirations. You will work closely with partner agencies including local authorities, social and private landlords to investigate sustainable affordable housing options.

Duties include
  • Offering appropriate levels of support in a sensitive manner considering the emotional and intellectual needs of the client, respecting their choice and privacy.
  • Undertake assessment of client needs, risks and suitability to be allocated a place in the service and if not eligible to refer on to a more appropriate service.
  • Liaise and work closely with other agencies and professionals.
  • Liaise and advocate on behalf of our clients.
  • To be responsible for managing individual client case‑management files and to put a safety plan in place relative to the victim and their family; have overall responsibility for updating and maintaining these.
  • To promote and be guided by the SafeLives Domestic Abuse Stalking and Harassment Risk Identification Checklist (DASH RIC). To recognise that this is a common tool that should be used by all practitioners.
  • To provide housing‑related support that is safety specific and signpost the individual to other agencies that will help sustain their tenancy or source appropriate accommodation. To facilitate access to appropriate accommodation / a change of address that is safety driven.
  • To work with the individual on the cycle of change and to regularly practise that a victim should never be forced to engage with a process that they are not comfortable with.
  • Carry out all necessary administrative tasks in relation to the job; ensuring all client file notes, support plans and risk assessments are kept up‑to‑date.
Who are we looking for

The post holder will be an experienced IDVA / ISVA or have experience of working with victims of domestic abuse and be willing to work towards a relevant IDVA / ISVA qualification. A good understanding of housing‑related support and welfare benefits, or awareness of issues faced by people at risk of homelessness, would be extremely useful in the role.

You need to be reliable because people are depending on you. You also need to be a great communicator both verbally and in writing and have basic IT and numerical skills. You will also have great organisation skills in order to effectively manage your own case load.
