Lead Mechanical Engineer

c. £63,000 plus up to 6% bonus and company car

This role requires regular travel to the Peterborough office and other sites across the East region of the UK for 2-3 days per week, with home working in between.

About the role

As the dedicated mechanical engineering specialist for the East region, you'll provide subject matter expertise, focusing on driving value through defining technical scope, optimizing design, simplifying processes, fostering innovation, and promoting standardisation - all while ensuring compliance with the business plan, technical standards, legislation, and quality requirements.

What you’ll be doing
  • Develop technical scope as part of the investment process.
  • Review and approve project technical queries and deviations.
  • Provide engineering discipline input to process safety assessments, quality and inspection activities, design reviews, and environmental engineering assessments.
  • Support cost and programme impact assessments for scope changes on in-flight projects.
  • Monitor and support technical compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide 'informed buyer' input for commercial activities including contract documents, project scopes, and tender evaluations.
  • Conduct T/PM/G/35 low/medium level assessment (MA/1) activities.
  • Challenge and review design and options at key investment milestones.
  • Contribute to factory/site inspection, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Support manufacturing and supplier quality assurance.
  • Capture lessons learned, best practices, and innovations to improve design efficiency.
About you

You’ll be proactive and collaborative, and thrive in a technical environment. You'll have strong interpersonal skills which will enable you to communicate, negotiate, and influence effectively across all levels of the business and with external stakeholders. You'll be passionate about engineering excellence and committed to continuous improvement and innovation.

Key requirements & experience
  • HNC/HND (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering
  • Strong background in mechanical engineering
  • Incorporated Engineer (with relevant professional institute)
  • Experience applying relevant policies, procedures, and resolving technical issues
  • Qualifications in auditing, IOSH, NEBOSH, design management, and CDM - desirable
  • Knowledge of design, safety, health, environment, and quality policies and procedures - desirable
  • Expertise in design, construction, operation, and maintenance of Gas Transmission assets - desirable
  • Understanding of ISO9001 and how quality management systems support successful project delivery - desirable
  • Familiarity with T/PM/G35 processes including design approval, commissioning, and asset acceptance - desirable
  • Understanding of CDM Regulations - desirable
  • Full UK driving licence
