You're an experienced developer who still enjoys writing code.

You've probably reached the point in your career where you want more influence over how things are built, more involvement in technical decisions, and the opportunity to help other developers grow, but you're not ready to stop being hands-on.

If that sounds like you, this could be a really good fit.

I'm working with a specialist software development business based in Nottingham that builds applications for the manufacturing industries, with clients around the world.

They're looking for a Lead Developer to take the reins of their existing in-house application development team and help take their cloud-based enterprise systems to the next level.

This is a genuinely mixed role. You'll spend 40%+ of your time coding, so you won't be moving into a role where your IDE gathers dust while you spend your days in meetings. The rest of your time will be focused on leading the team, making technical decisions, planning work, removing blockers, and helping the developers around you become better at what they do.

You'll be involved throughout the development lifecycle, from planning and technical design through to coding, testing, production support, and everything in between.

Technically, you'll be working with a modern development stack including .NET 8+, C#, ASP.NET Core, Angular 18+, AWS, microservices, RabbitMQ, alongside AI tooling and NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB.

You'll also have plenty of influence over how the team works.

You'll lead sprint planning and retrospectives, help shape the backlog, make architecture and technology decisions, carry out code reviews, and make sure the team maintains high standards around code quality and security.

AI is a core focus for the teams here, so commercial experience and advocacy of AI assisted workflows is going to be paramount; you'll be leading the way in your team with AI adoption.

When something goes wrong, you'll be one of the people helping figure it out. You'll get involved in complex debugging, production support, incident response, and technical escalations, while making sure the team learns from problems rather than simply fixing them and moving on.

And then there's the people side.

You'll manage a team of Senior, mid-level, and Junior Developers, helping them develop both technically and professionally. You'll provide mentoring, support performance discussions, help resolve conflicts, and generally make sure the team has what it needs to do great work.

You'll work closely with the Development Manager, Product Owner, other Lead Developers, Staff Developers, Solution Architects, Principal Developer, QA Engineers, and wider delivery teams, so you'll need to be comfortable communicating with both technical and non-technical people.

The ideal person is someone who can switch between writing code, discussing architecture, helping a developer work through a problem, and figuring out why a sprint is going off track without losing sight of the bigger picture.

You'll need at least 5 years of relevant development experience, along with previous experience leading a software development team. A degree or equivalent experience is required.

The role offers a good balance of technical challenge and leadership responsibility, with the opportunity to make a real difference to both the products being built and the people building them.

Benefits
  • Competitive salary
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays, increasing with service
  • Holiday buy scheme
  • Pension
  • Death in Service and critical illness cover
  • Salary sacrifice schemes
  • Flexible start and finish times within core hours
  • Free parking

If you're looking for your next step where you can still code, still get stuck into technical problems, but also have the opportunity to lead and develop a team, this could be exactly what you're looking for.

We welcome diverse applicants and are dedicated to treating all applicants with dignity and respect, regardless of background
