The Medical Directorate is accountable to the NES Board and Scottish Government for commissioning and delivering postgraduate medical education in Scotland. Training is delivered through general practices and NHS Boards in line with standards set by the General Medical Council (GMC). The Directorate oversees training delivery, quality, and trainee progression to ensure GMC compliance.
You will play a senior strategic leadership role within the Medical Directorate, supporting the Medical Director and contributing at UK, Scottish, and regional levels to the development of postgraduate medical education and the wider NHS workforce.
You will work closely with the senior team to provide leadership, governance, and support for approximately 7,000 resident doctors across Scotland. You will lead a team of Associate Postgraduate Deans and hold accountability for additional Directorate workstreams.
You will be medically qualified, with a background in primary or secondary care or public health and have a strong understanding of postgraduate medical education. You will demonstrate strategic thinking, influencing and partnership-working skills, and be a visible, credible leader able to operate effectively within a complex national environment.
You will be motivated by the opportunity to lead within a strategically significant Directorate that directly impacts clinical care and patient safety.
