Samuel Frank is recruiting for a Lead Controls Engineer with strong TIA Portal programming knowledge to join a Sheffield based specialist engineering company. The successful Lead Controls Engineer is likely to have worked in the following sectors – special purpose machinery, automated warehousing, conveyors, baggage handling or factory automation.

  • Leading software activities for mainly material handling/conveyor type projects
  • Lead Controls Engineer will have the remit to grow a team over the coming years
  • Knowledge of SCL (Structured Control Language) for data management and loops is required
  • Company has a culture of pushing the boundaries of what systems and technology can do – candidate must be open and willing to explore new technologies
  • Lead Controls Engineer will contribute to the development and/or review of the project FDS
  • Design system architectures and software components using Siemens TIA Portal
  • Conduct Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and software validation
  • Oversee system integration, upgrades and commissioning
  • Some site based commissioning – 50/50 split between office and being out on customer sites – mainly UK site with some international travel; site visits typically 2‑3 weeks in duration
  • Experience with IP‑based architectures, ProfiNet, ProfiBus, Asi and other industrial network technologies
  • Understanding of design, build and project delivery methods
  • Experience with high level languages would be advantageous or a desire to learn (e.g. Python, C++, PHP, Java)
  • 1 day per week (when not working on site) can be worked from home
  • When working away, any hours worked over 40/week will be classed as overtime and paid at x1.25 for hours worked Monday‑Friday and x1.5 for hours worked on weekends
  • Office hours are typically 8:15‑5pm Monday‑Thursday and 8:15‑2pm on Fridays, or you can choose to work 8:15‑4:30pm Monday‑Friday
  • Department manager estimates Lead Control Engineer earning between £5‑10k per year in overtime is realistic, given the work schedule
  • All applicants need to be based in the UK and be able to travel internationally freely without restrictions

The role is easily commutable from the following places in South Yorkshire – Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Chesterfield and Worksop – as well as locations further afield for those willing to commute, such as Leeds, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Selby, Wetherby, Hull, Mansfield, Nottingham, Reford, Derby, Lincoln, Buxton, Matlock and Bakewell.
