Job summary

GE Vernova in the United Kingdom is seeking a Lead Control & Protection Application Software Engineer to join a dynamic team designing, developing and maintaining HVDC control software for LCC and VSC schemes.

You will lead an expert group, applying MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD and RSCAD to validate and integrate software across control and protection systems, while mentoring team members and driving continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree in Computer Science or power systems and power electronics.
  • Experience with HVDC control and protection knowledge.
  • Strong MATLAB/Simulink experience for control development.
  • Experience with Git, Jira and Confluence for version control and task tracking.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee requirements, design, implementation and testing of HVDC control software.
  • Collaborate with an expert team to develop skills in power electronics and grid tech.
  • Perform analysis, simulation, testing, and integration to meet standards.
  • Propose solutions using deep technical discipline and problem solving.
  • Lead MIL, SIL and HIL validation with MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, and RSCAD.
  • Coach and mentor junior members and lead small projects.
  • Drive continuous improvement and operational planning within the discipline.

Job Description Summary

The Lead Control & Protection Application Software Engineer will be part of highly motivated dynamic team of engineers working on design, development and maintenance of control and protection system application software for LCC and VSC HVDC schemes following full SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle).

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for overall requirements, design, implementation and testing of HVDC Control and Protection application software.
  • Work as part of an expert team, giving ample opportunity for learning design and develop skills highly relevant for working with any control and protection system; in particular, power electronics systems and grid technology.
  • Execute the analysis, simulation, test, and integration required to define, and support assigned components, modules or systems that meet business standards.
  • Apply prior experience and on the job training to solve problems. Propose solutions utilizing in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline, analytical thinking, and technical experience in solving problems.
  • Lead validation efforts with high-fidelity computer models in Model-in-the-Loop (MIL), Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), using software tools such as MATLAB / Simulink, PSCAD and RSCAD.
  • Coach and mentor team members with less experience, lead small projects with low risks and resource requirements. Develop skills within the team and manage performance.
  • Lead and active participation in continuous improvement activities.
  • Responsible for operational planning/execution within a technical discipline.
Qualifications / Essential Requirements
  • Engineering degree in Computer Science or power systems and power electronics subjects or proven equivalent knowledge and experience in HVDC business.
  • Competent on functional characteristics of power systems and interactions between AC and HVDC systems.
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB / Simulink for control development
  • Promote Agile Software development practices within the team.
  • Lead team members on Git, Jira and Confluence for version control, task/defect management and documentation.
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills and can-do attitude.
