Job summary

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Sheffield invites applications for two fixed-term LAS posts in General Surgery at ST3+ level. The posts run for nine months from 11 January 2027 at the Northern General Hospital.

LAS ST3+ in General Surgery

The closing date is 08 November 2026

Applicants are invited to apply for 2 Fixed Term LAS Posts in General Surgery. The posts are for 9 months duration starting 11th January 2027 to 5th October 2027, based at the Northern General Hospital.

The posts offer training and further experience in different aspects of General Surgery at Specialty Registrar level (ST3+)

The posts do not award a National Training Number. As these posts are not recognised as 'training posts', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice is required, at the time of application and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required.

Qualifications

• Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of application
• Basic Medical Degree from a recognised UK or overseas university or institution
• MRCS (or equivalent)
• Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK (ALS) or equivalent by the date of application

Clinical experience

• Completed foundation training and core surgical training (4 years) from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation programme or equivalent
• Minimum of 12 months NHS Clinical experience (not clinical observer)
• Experience in General Surgery at a Registrar level

Research

• Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
• Basic understanding of research methods and statistics
• Publications in Peer reviewed journals

CPD

• Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
• Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Personal attributes

• Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values
• Ability to work as part of a team
• The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC's good medical practice (2013).

Teaching and Training

• Experience of teaching medical students and resident doctors
• To have the ability and willingness to teach at all levels and to all groups of staff
