Job summary

The Labour Ward Coordinator is a senior midwifery role responsible for the day-to-day operational management and clinical leadership of the labour ward. The post holder will ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, and evidence-based care for women and their babies in a dynamic and often unpredictable environment. You will coordinate staffing and workload, ensuring appropriate skill mix and prioritisation of care, while acting as a key point of contact for the maternity unit, including out-of-hours support. The role requires strong leadership, sound clinical judgement, and the ability to manage complex and high-risk situations effectively. In addition to providing expert clinical support, you will supervise and develop staff, contribute to audit and quality improvement, and ensure compliance with professional standards and organisational policies. This is a pivotal role requiring excellent communication, resilience, and the ability to lead and inspire a multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

• Provide clinical leadership and day-to-day coordination of the labour ward, ensuring safe and effective service delivery
• Assess patient needs and allocate staff appropriately, maintaining the right skill mix at all times
• Deliver and support high-quality, evidence-based midwifery care, including managing complex and high-risk cases
• Act as a key point of contact for the maternity unit, including out-of-hours coordination and escalation
• Supervise, support, and performance manage staff, providing guidance, feedback, and mentorship
• Ensure effective communication within the multidisciplinary team and with women and their families
• Monitor standards of care, ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with professional and organisational policies
• Lead on prioritisation of workload in a fast-paced, unpredictable environment
• Participate in audit, governance, and quality improvement activities to enhance service delivery
• Support education and training, contributing to staff development and maintaining a positive learning environment
• Maintain a safe clinical environment, including oversight of equipment, resources, and incident reporting
