Laboratory Science Technician (Maternity Cover)

Position summary : We are seeking to appoint a Laboratory Science Technician to cover maternity leave until November 2026.

Closing date for applications : 7th January 2026.

Interviews : 15th January 2026.

Introduction : The College has four faculties, each with a Faculty Head, Deputy Faculty Head and a number of Heads of School. In this role, you will work with the Science, Access and A Level Programme areas to support science courses and maintain accurate equipment inventories.

Aims of the job : Provide technical support for science courses, ensuring effective curriculum delivery, accurate inventory and safety compliance.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
  • Prepare materials for practical sessions to deadline.
  • Keep laboratories and clinics clean and tidy and maintain the prep room in an orderly condition.
  • Work alongside and support the senior technician and lecturers in all practical lessons.
  • Advise Lecturers as to alternative procedures or equipment.
  • Complete and update risk assessments for practical activities and COSHH records for all chemicals.
  • Liaise with the local fire service and other relevant external parties in relation to radioactive materials.
  • Check equipment on a daily basis to make sure it is in a safe working order at all times.
  • Have a sound knowledge of health and safety in the lab.
  • Attend and contribute to the divisional meetings.
  • Attend the college's health and safety meetings and monitor health and safety in the science laboratories at all times.
  • Undertake first aid duties and be responsible for updating first aid qualification as and when necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain stock control.
  • Support at college open days and taster events.
  • Any other duties, which are commensurate with the grade and nature of the post.
