Role Summary

The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford is seeking to appoint a fixed term (maternity cover) Laboratory Technician in Geochemistry. The successful post holder will support research in Ocean Biogeochemistry, Earth Surface Geochemistry, Stratigraphy and Sedimentology, and Volcanology. These groups conduct world‑leading research supported by national and international funding agencies.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the running of the Cleansuite Small Research Facility, where approaches in analytical chemistry are applied (e.g., column chemistry and sample purification) by researchers.
  • Supervise procedures essential to successfully support the research in Geochemistry.
  • Work alongside the Departmental Safety Officer to ensure all health and safety requirements in the Cleansuite are followed in line with procedures, including facilitating research within the Department.
  • Mentor and train others, demonstrating excellent communication skills.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Natural Sciences (e.g., Chemistry, Earth Sciences, or related discipline) or working towards a doctorate.
  • Experience with proven dexterity and skills in laboratory protocols, knowledge of clean laboratory requirements, and use of acid digestion methods.
  • Possession of sufficient knowledge in the discipline to work with diverse research teams.
  • Ability to work independently and manage associated activities.
