Job summary

ALS is seeking a motivated Laboratory Technician to join our Prescot team. You will perform routine and non-routine lab tests, prepare samples, and support quality control within ISO 17025-compliant processes.

Key requirements include practical lab experience, attention to detail, and familiarity with LIMS and lab IT systems. Rotating shifts with a weekly training period are offered, along with a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

  • Good practical laboratory experience and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with laboratory IT systems and ISO 17025 standards.
  • Ability to record results accurately and maintain traceability.
  • Experience with high-quality chemical analysis preferred, esp. minerals/metals.

Laboratory Technician

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our team in Prescot. You will support the delivery of accurate, reliable and timely laboratory results while maintaining high standards of quality, health and safety and ISO 17025 compliance.

About the Role:

Number of Roles: 2

Location: Prescot

Hours Per Week: 37.5

Shift/Hours: There will be a four-week initial training period working Monday to Friday (07:30 - 16:00). Following training, you will work Monday to Friday on rotating shifts of 06:00 - 14:00 and 13:30 - 21:30, with a shift allowance of £3,250.

Contract: Full Time & Permanent

Closing Date: Thursday 17th September 2026

The Day to Day
  • Carry out routine and non-routine laboratory testing, sample preparation and quality control checks.
  • Operate, monitor and maintain laboratory equipment and analytical instrumentation, reporting any faults or maintenance requirements.
  • Accurately record results, maintain documentation and ensure full sample traceability.
  • Review work for accuracy and compliance, troubleshoot routine issues and escape complex concerns when required.
  • Manage your workload to meet productivity, turnover and customer service targets while supporting investigations into quality issues.
  • Follow SOPs, ISO 17025 and health and safety requirements, maintaining a clean, safe and organised laboratory.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to the development of laboratory methods and continuous improvement initiatives.
The Essentials
  • Good practical laboratory experience, dexterity, attention to detail and the ability to multitask and work to deadlines.
  • Understanding of laboratory IT systems, with knowledge of LIMS desirable.
  • Good awareness of laboratory quality standards, ISO 17025 and health and safety requirements.
  • An investigative and scientific approach, with the ability to communicate technical information effective.
  • A respectful, collaborative and team-focused approach.
  • Good attention to detail
Desirable:
  • One to three years' experience in an analytical testing laboratory, or equivalent Level 3 science apprenticeship or structured laboratory training, with experience of high-quality chemical analysis - ideally in the minerals and metals sector. An HNC/HND in Applied Chemistry or an equivalent science-related qualification
  • Experience of contributing to quality improvement would be desirable.
