Job summary

Airbus's Materials Laboratory in Broughton, North Wales, offers an undergraduate placement starting 16 August 2027 for 12.5 months. You will work with engineering teams, design and run experiments, and analyze data to support material testing and processes.

The role requires an undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Materials Engineering, or Chemical Engineering, with strong teamwork, rigorous adherence to processes, and solid laboratory and analytical skills.

About us

The Materials Laboratory function provides specialist services to various departments at Airbus in the UK, Broughton and external customers and suppliers. The department carries out a wide range of technical activities in support of various customers, some examples are described below:

• Mechanical Testing - Carrying out all testing of a mechanical nature - such as testing of heat treatment control coupons. UTS and pre-load testing on mechanically fastened joints.
• Chemical - Control and monitoring of chemicals used in surface treatments facilities. Chemical analysis associated with performance checks of equipment and consumables.
• Metallurgical - Investigation of product/material non-conformance including material/component failures. Approval of specialist manufacturing personnel and assessment of suppliers technical capabilities.

What you will be doing

• Interface with operational teams and integrate with all support functions; Gather data through investigations, experiments and literature reviews; Design and or carry out experiments; Analyse and interpret results of technical work and testing; Statistical analysis or data generated; General laboratory practices; Research; Adhere to and promote COSHH requirements within the Laboratory environment in accordance with local procedures; Perform regular and specific feedback of achievement and findings; Generate protocols, summary reports, standard operating procedures and other Laboratory related documents; Maintain data integrity, systems and records; Identify and implement improvements to daily Laboratory operations, cycle times, test methods.

Requirements

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

• You will be studying towards a degree in Chemistry, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or other appropriate related degree; Thrives in a challenging environment; Adherence to processes; Team working; Laboratory experience is preferred; Excellent research and presentation skills; Knowledge of analytical methods and instruments.

Security clearance

SECURITY CLEARANCE: You will be subject to a BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) check. You may also need to gain UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control, depending on the role.
