Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) invites applications for a laboratory-based role in the Quality Assurance Unit at Sutton Bonington. The post holder will perform laboratory and administrative tasks that support proficiency testing schemes and ensure high-quality services in line with ISO/IEC 17043.

The role is on-site at Sutton Bonington, involves handling biological materials, and offers opportunities for professional development, including funded apprenticeship programmes where eligible.

Responsibilities

• Preparation, dispensing and freeze-drying of biological materials.
• Quality control testing of samples using microbiological and related laboratory techniques.
• Preparation of sample dilutions and working materials.
• Preparation, labelling, packaging and distribution of proficiency testing samples.
• Preparation of shipping documentation, including customs declarations and import/export paperwork.
• Stock management and tracking of biological materials and laboratory consumables.
• Operation, maintenance and routine checks of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
• Monitoring stock levels and raising orders for consumables and equipment as required.
• Writing, reviewing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and associated documentation.
• Supporting continuous improvement and project-based activities within the Unit.
• More experienced ASOs may assist with the coordination of a small number of proficiency testing schemes under supervision.
