Job Description

Please note this is a full time role working 37.5 hours per week -Saturday to Wednesday 09:30 till 17:30.

The purpose of this role is to complete, to the required quality standards, the analysis of food samples for a given method using laboratory techniques. Further, assist in the efficient day-to-day operation of the laboratory.

  • Register samples accurately and rapidly for analysis, taking temperature checks from samples on receipt promptly where necessary.
  • Sub-culturing, plate reading, confirmations, and validation of analytical results as required.
  • Run any equipment required for analysis, such as Vidas/GeneUP.
  • Report results in accordance with methods of analysis and customer requirements.
  • Be familiar with laboratory FGS software and implement processes relating to sample/test data entry.
  • Report and investigate any media quality control failures without delay.
  • Adhere to documented procedures in the Quality System for all aspects of laboratory work, ensuring all relevant information concerning samples is recorded, samples are handled correctly, and all necessary records and quality data are maintained.
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the work area, ensuring it is always kept clean and tidy with due attention to the careful maintenance of all laboratory fittings and equipment. This includes the removal of waste generated while working, following guidelines for waste disposal.
  • Ensure all appropriate paperwork is filled out daily.
  • Drive the laboratory forward through continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of the Laboratory Quality Manual to ensure compliance at all times with policies, procedures, and associated documents.
  • Raise NCWs following any non-conformance, investigate root causes, and implement actions to assist with continuous improvement.
  • Assist in meeting the requirements of the UKAS accreditation standard.
  • Highlight any issues identified to the Line Leader/Team Leader.
  • Provide high-level internal and external customer care by ensuring all results are delivered accurately and on time.
  • Produce all media safely and appropriately in line with standard operating procedures.
  • Carry out media QC, IQC, environmental monitoring in line with the quality standard and written methods/procedures.
  • Any other reasonable tasks as delegated by the line manager.
  • Assist other departments as and when required with a flexible approach to work.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in relevant scientific subject area.
  • Knowledge of UKAS, ISO methods, and processes carried out within a microbiology laboratory would be of advantage.
  • Experience in working in part of a team.
  • Good origination and time management.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Able to self-motivate.
