Job summary

AWD online in Reading is seeking a Kitchen Assistant to support food preparation, meal service and resident care in an Extra Care dining environment. You will help with kitchen cleanliness, stock rotation and front-of-house service, working closely with the Chef Manager to deliver high-quality meals and a welcoming dining experience for residents.

This part-time, permanent role is 20 hours per week, Monday to Friday 9:30am–1:30pm.

Qualifications

  • Comfortable in a fast-paced kitchen and catering environment.
  • Able to engage with elderly residents and families with care.
  • Good awareness of food hygiene, health and safety.
  • Confident using online training and basic systems.
  • Reliable, organised and able to work as part of a team.
  • Cooking experience and Extra Care knowledge beneficial.
  • GCSE Maths and English (A*-C) desirable.
  • A positive, caring and collaborative attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Support food preparation and meal service for residents.
  • Check resident profiles for allergies, preferences and IDDSI ratings.
  • Maintain kitchen cleanliness and storerooms/equipment areas.
  • Assist with deliveries, stock rotation and stock checks.
  • Carry out health and safety and food hygiene checks.
  • Support inspections, audits and reporting requirements.
  • Provide front-of-house service in the restaurant environment.
  • Act up as Chef when required after induction and training.
  • Complete and keep up with mandatory training.

Kitchen Assistant

A reliable Kitchen Assistant is required to support food preparation, meal service, food hygiene, kitchen operations and customer service within a welcoming Extra Care dining environment.

Previous experience in roles such as Catering Assistant, Food Service Assistant, General Catering Assistant, Kitchen Porter, Dining Assistant, Restaurant Assistant, Café Assistant, Food Preparation Assistant, Hospitality Assistant, Care Home Catering Assistant will be an advantage.

Salary: £13.45 per hour + Benefits.

Location: Reading, Berkshire (RG30).

Job Type: Part-Time, Permanent. Working Hours: 20 Hours per Week, Monday to Friday, 9:30am – 1:30pm.

Job Overview

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Kitchen Assistant to join a friendly catering team supporting the delivery of high-quality meals and excellent customer service within an Extra Care setting.

As the Kitchen Assistant you will help with food preparation, meal service, packed teas, kitchen cleanliness, stock rotation and front-of-house support, while maintaining high standards of food hygiene, health and safety and resident care. The Kitchen Assistant will work closely with the Chef Manager and wider team to help create a safe, welcoming and well-run dining experience for residents every day.

Duties
  • Support food preparation and meal service, including preparing packed teas and serving meals to residents.
  • Check resident food profiles, including allergies, preferences and IDDSI ratings, in line with company and Environmental Health standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness across the kitchen, storerooms, kitchen office and equipment areas, including washing uniforms on site.
  • Support the Chef Manager with deliveries, stock rotation and removing out-of-date items, highlighting when stock levels are running low.
  • Carry out health and safety and food hygiene checks in line with catering standards and statutory regulations.
  • Support the Chef Manager in preparing for inspections, audits and reporting requirements.
  • Provide a high standard of front-of-house service within the restaurant environment.
  • Act up as Chef when required, following completion of induction and training.
  • Complete and keep up to date with mandatory training requirements.
Candidate Requirements
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced kitchen and catering environment.
  • Able to engage with elderly and vulnerable customers and their families in a respectful and caring way.
  • Good awareness of food hygiene, health and safety and safe working practices.
  • Confident using computers for online training and basic systems.
  • Reliable, organised and able to work as part of a team.
  • Cooking experience and knowledge of an Extra Care environment would be beneficial.
  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent in Maths and English, Grades A*–C, is desirable.
  • A positive approach and willingness to demonstrate caring, collaborative and forward-thinking values.
