Being a Junior Systems Engineer at Box UK

As a member of our System Engineering team, you’ll play a key role in delivering enterprise-level infrastructure, working on projects ranging from small internal tools to large-scale platforms. You’ll grow your skills across multiple cloud providers and automation technologies as part of a collaborative team.

In this role you will:
  • Utilise your knowledge and problem solving skills to help develop and maintain reliable infrastructure platforms.
  • Troubleshoot, investigate, and fix bugs
  • Contribute to routine work, including certificate renewals and OS updates
  • Participate in, and undertake, code reviews
  • Attend and contribute to internal team sprint ceremonies
  • Work closely with senior team members to build your skills
  • Maintain automated deployments and test/production infrastructure
  • Develop infrastructure as code (IaC)
  • Support safe deployments, debugging and monitoring
  • Collaborate within teams to discuss ideas, challenges and solutions

What you’ll bring:
  • Strong communication: You express yourself clearly, listen well, and build effective, collaborative relationships with colleagues at every level
  • Motivation and problem-solving: You’re driven to learn new languages, tools and techniques, and you bring genuine enthusiasm to tackling complex challenges with creative solutions
  • Results focus: You keep your efforts aimed at clear objectives and see tasks through to a high standard
  • Adaptability and resilience: You respond readily to changing circumstances, stay focused and composed under pressure, and bounce back from setbacks
  • Attention to detail: You take a thorough approach to your work, no matter how small the task

Required technical experience:
  • Working with Linux systems
  • Scripting in either Windows or Linux
  • Setting up Linux based services including MySQL, NGINX and PHP-FPM
  • Using either AWS, GCP or Azure platforms
  • Using tools such as Terraform and Ansible
  • Programming languages or bash scripting
  • Experience in delivering secure platforms
  • A love of clean coding practices

Ideally, you also have:
  • A passion for continual iterative improvements
  • An ability to turn complex problems into simple solutions
  • Some familiarity with DevOps principles
  • Experience of trunk-based development and CI/CD practices
  • Experience of using Jira and Confluence

Not sure you meet every requirement? That’s okay. We’re building a diverse, welcoming team, and we know great engineers grow into roles rather than arrive fully formed. If you’re passionate about this role and keen to learn and develop with us, we’d love to hear from you – even if you’re not there yet on every point above.

And in return you’ll get:
  • A salary of up to £35,000 per annum
  • 33 days annual leave (including public holidays)
  • 5% contributory pension scheme*
  • Death in service insurance cover*
  • Private medical insurance with AXA PPP Healthcare and Medicash*
  • Cycle to Work scheme*
  • Working abroad opportunities, in line with our Working Abroad Policy
  • Volunteer time off
  • Ongoing support for your professional learning and development

*Available upon successful completion of your probationary period
