Job description
Job Title: Junior Sister – Children and Young People’s Day Unit

A Vacancy at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. The Children and Young People's Day Unit are looking for a highly motivated Junior Sister to join the team. The ideal candidate will have experience as a Band 6 Staff Nurse with a background of SACT administration experience, Intrathecal and Recovery competency, although other backgrounds will be considered.

Our busy CYP Day Care and Outpatients sees over 6000 patients a year, requiring systemic anti-cancer therapy, radiotherapy, procedures under general anaesthesia, and supportive care, delivered by our team.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long‑term goals or plans.
  • Participate fully in day‑to‑day organization and running of Children Young People’s Day Unit /Outpatient/McElwain Ward and Teenage Cancer Unit (CYPDU/OP, TCT, MCE) including oversight of e‑scheduling, outpatient, admissions and community appointments to ensure a smooth patient’s pathway.
  • Complete first level assessment of CYP patients with cancer and their families to gain understanding of their physiological, psycho‑social, spiritual and cultural needs and develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure those needs are met.
  • Countercheck patients’ vital signs, blood results, patient body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.
  • Educate patients on their treatment indications and side effects.
  • Ensure necessary medication and follow‑up appointments are obtained.
  • Plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through to discharge/transfer discussing with patient, family and multidisciplinary teams, alerting Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes.
  • Set goals for each identified nursing issue and encourage/teach other nursing staff to do the same, helping patient achieve set goals through care planning.
Qualifications

Band 6 Staff Nurse experience with SACT administration background, Intrathecal and Recovery competency. Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, ability to work in multidisciplinary team, dedication to patient‑focused care.
