We have clearly set out in our job description and person specification the essential criteria for the roles (please see below).

You may be thinking about taking time to consider your future career direction while still working and acquiring additional skills and experience or you may have elected to take time away from training progression but now wish to re-establish a foothold in the profession. Alternatively, you may be looking to take time out of your training programme to gain further experience in emergency medicine in a major trauma centre. We welcome all applications!

For a Junior post
  • We expect you to have at least three years post MBBS (or equivalent) in addition to at least one year in an NHS Emergency Department (ED) it would be desirable to have experience in Paediatric Medicine, Paediatric Surgery or Paediatric Emergency Medicine
  • You must be an APLS provider
  • Have a good and wide ranging recent experience of clinical medicine in acute inpatient setting.
For a Senior post
  • We expect you to have at least five years post MBBS (or equivalent) in addition to at least 1 years experience in an NHS Emergency Department (ED). It would be desirable to have experience in Paediatric Medicine, Paediatric Surgery or Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
  • You must be an APLS provider
  • Full MRCEM or MRCPCH
  • Have a good and wide ranging recent experience of clinical medicine in acute inpatient setting.

These are service posts so do not have educational approval, but you will be provided with excellent training and educational opportunities, tailored to meet your individual needs.

We expect that you will keep yourself up to date with current knowledge and practice, attend clinical meetings within the department and to participate in audit and in service training of other professionals.

Clinical Fellows in the CYPED can expect to:
  • Build on previous experience and develop increased expertise in the identification, assessment and management of sick patients
  • Gain experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of medical conditions, with appropriated decision making around need for admission and discharge +/- primary care/specialty follow up
  • Gain experience and familiarity in managing poly-trauma patients and the concept of "silver trauma"
  • Have opportunities to acquire additional skills such as fascia iliaca block, chest drain etc
  • To enhance your communication skills with patients relatives and colleagues
  • To keep up to date with mandatory training required for your role
  • To participate in the annual appraisal process

  • Experience in large acute hospital (more than 1000 beds)
  • Relevant additional experience in Paediatric Medicine, Paediatric Surgery or Paediatric Emergency Medicine
Communication and Relationship Skills

  • Good standard of written English
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to work with children and their families
Planning and organisation skills
Essential criteria
  • Evidence of active involvement in design and running of relevant clinical audit
  • Presentation of case reports, audit or research results
Desirable criteria
  • Motivation to pursue a career in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Evidence of participation in research or audit related to paediatric topics.
